Mildred Laws (Higgins)
April 16, 1948 - March 1, 2026

Mildred Higgins Laws, lovingly known as “Ninny,” was born on April 16, 1948, in Birmingham, Alabama, to the late James Higgins and Linchie Drake. She was the third child and youngest daughter born to this union.

At an early age, Mildred confessed her faith in Christ and united with Zion Hill Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J. L. Garrett. She received her education in the Birmingham City School System and graduated from Ullman High School with the Class of 1966.

Mildred was a longtime resident of the West End community of Birmingham. She was a dedicated and faithful employee of Southern Bell Company, where she worked for many years until her retirement.

Affectionately called “Ninny” by her family and loved ones, Mildred was known for her stylish fashion, gentle spirit, and kindness toward others. She possessed a heart of generosity and continuously found ways to bless those around her. Even during her final days, she remained thoughtful and giving to family and friends. Clothed in Southern charm and grace, she exemplified class, dignity, and love. Her presence brought immense joy to everyone who knew her.

In 1966, Mildred married the love of her life, Oscar Laws. To this union two sons were born, Steven and Roderick, whom she loved deeply and devoted her life to nurturing and supporting. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Oscar Laws (2011), and her youngest son, Roderick Laws (2005).

Mildred leaves to cherish her precious memories and legacy: her devoted son, Steven Lee Laws; her beloved grandchildren, Dorshay Laws, JaKorie Parker, Jamaka Parker, Talawren Simmon, and Shayla Keaton; three siblings, Hilda Crenshaw, Ophelia Erwin, and Cleopus Higgins; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.

Her life was a beautiful reflection of love, generosity, faith, and grace. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
