Emma Louise York Gathen was born on September 14, 1950 in Osceola, Arkansas to Mary Tuggle York and George York. She was a woman whose life reflected service, compassion, and a deep commitment to uplifting others. She departed this life on March 4, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, leadership, and community impact that will forever be remembered by those who knew and loved her.
A devoted educator, Emma served as principal of Central Elementary School, where she touched the lives of a multitude of young people. Through her leadership, guidance, and genuine care for students and teachers alike, she helped shape the futures of countless children. Her dedication to education extended far beyond the classroom, as she believed deeply in the power of learning and encouragement to transform lives.
Emma confessed a hope in Christ and was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Blytheville. She was a proud and dedicated member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, where she embraced the organization’s mission of scholarship, service, sisterhood, and finer womanhood. Her commitment to service was evident in the many ways she supported and uplifted her community. Known for her warm spirit and generous heart, she was admired as a kind and gracious lady who always made time to support others. She was also a member of the Versatile 25 Social Club.
Mrs. Gathen was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mr. LeTroy Gathen, her sister, Mrs. Christine Orr, and her parents.
She leaves to cherish her loving memory her brothers, Mr. Thomas (Adrienne) Crosby of Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Charles (Wynne) Crosby of Kankakee, Illinois, Mr. Freddie (Mordie) Byrd of Osceola, Arkansas, and Mr. Edgar (Sylvia) Byrd of Dyersburg, Tennessee; her sister, Mrs. Willa (Theodor) Brown of Blytheville, Arkansas; and a bonus daughter, Ms. Lula Anderson of Blytheville, Arkansas. She also leaves a host of extended family members, friends, former students, and colleagues whose lives were enriched by her presence.
Emma York Gathen will be remembered for her unwavering dedication to education, her faithful service to her community, and the love and kindness she shared so freely. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and she will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Louise York Gathen will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at First Missionary Baptist Church where Reverend Odale Jones is the pastor and eulogist. Visitation will begin at 11 A.M. and funeral services will begin at 12 noon. Interment will take place at Memorial Park Cemetery.
