George Jenkins

Mr. George Edward Jenkins, 80, was born on February 17, 1936 to the late James Martin and Georgia McLean Jenkins in Cameron, North Carolina. He departed this life on July 8, 2016 at the VA Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by three brothers, James, Lewis, and Roland Jenkins and one sister Ruby Johnson. He graduated from Pinckney High School, Carthage North Carolina on May 27, 1952 at 16 years old. He went on to further his Education at N.C. A&T University and Fayetteville State University with degrees in Business Management and Computer Science retiring from Honeywell as a System’s Engineer and the Computer Science Corporation as a Programmer. He taught Computer Programming at Durham Technical Community College for several years. He served six years active duty in the United States Army and four years with the United States Army Reserves receiving an honorable discharge from service in May of 1962. He was a licensed pilot who owned and flew his airplane and enjoyed several sporting venues especially auto racing and fishing, but his greatest joy in sports was watching his youngest son Jason play football for Northern High School and Duke University. He is a former member of Hoods Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where he served in several capacities. Following their marriage, he and Winnie rededicated their lives to Christ and joined Union Baptist Church, Durham North Carolina where he attended until his health began to fail. He was a staunch supporter and institutor of church and community educational programs for both youth and adults. He has planned and conducted numerous youth workshops and computer camps by way of his nonprofit organization Jenkins Trainings Associates which he shared with his son Charles. Additionally, he was very active in Fraternal and Masonic organizations. He was a member of the Eta Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity Inc. He was member of Bull City Elks Lodge No.317, Durham, NC, a Past State President of the IBPOEW, and a Past Grand Exalted Ruler. A Mason of the 33rd Degree, he was a Past Master of Red Mountain Masonic Lodge, No. 468 F&AM, and a Past Worthy Patron of Shenadoah Chapter No.661, O.E.S. Rougemont, NC, A Past Excellent High Priest of C-Hudson Chapter No.63, Durham, NC, G.E. Jenkins Chapter No.82 HRAM, Rougemont, NC and a Past Grand High Priest of the Most Excellent Grand Chapter, Holy Royal Arch Masons, for the jurisdiction of NC. He was a Past Worthy Joshua and member of Boyd and Hodge Court No.7, Heroines of Jericho, Durham, NC. and a Past Thrice Illustrious Master of King Solomon council No. 1 of the Royal and Select Masters, Fayetteville NC. He was a Past Eminent Commander of Tuner Mears Commandery No.8, Durham, NC, and Red Mountain Commandery No.18 and the Past Right Eminent Grand Commander of the Tar Heel Grand Commandery for the State of NC. He also served as the Deputy of the Orient and Grand Recorder for the Grand Encampment of Knights Templar International. He was a Past Chief Engineer of Maria Court No.1, Cyrene Crusaders, PHA. He was a Past Commander In Chief of Durham Consistory No. 218, Scottish Rite Masonry (A.A.S.R.F.M.) and a member of the Durham Commanders of the Rite (33rd) Durham, NC. And he was a Past Potentate of Zafa Temple No.176, Prince Hall Shriners, (A.E.O.N.M.S.) Durham, NC. During his active years, he was always busy and always had the spirit to serve. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Winnie Murrill Jenkins: five sons, Frederick Gilmore of Cameron, NC, Jason Jenkins (Karla) Miami, Florida, Dr. Charles Murrill (Cynthia) Durham, Reginald Murrill (Pam), and Marvin Murrill, five daughters, Cassandra Jenkins, Michelle Moore (John), Stephanie Murrill, Theresa Murrill, Rose Murrill, one brother, Carl Jenkins (Anna) of Spokane Washington, three sisters, Grace Smith of Raleigh, NC, Mary Jenkins of Gastonia, NC and Nellie Jenkins of Cameron, NC and numerous Cousins, Nephews, Nieces and a Host of other relatives and friends. The family is receiving Visitations at 5324 Shady Bluff Street, Durham, NC. The Wake will be held on Wednesday from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home. The Funeral service will be held on Thursday at Union Baptist Church, Address: 904 N Roxboro St, Durham, NC at 1:00 p.m. Rev. Dr. Kenneth Ray Hammond Officiating.
