James Gary Olive, 89 of Linden, New Jersey, “graduated into God's heavenly college” on March 19, 2026. He was born on October 10, 1936, in Fuquay-Varina, NC, to the late Lottie B. Utley-Thomas and the Late Alton Olive.
He was the oldest boy among seven children and attended the Fuquay-Varina public school system, graduating from Fuquay-Varina Consolidated High School in 1955. In his younger years, he enjoyed singing in the school's choral club, fishing, hunting, and working on cars. He was also an avid golfer and loved to spend time reading the newspaper at the park.
Mr. Olive retired from Hoffman-La Roche, Nutley, New Jersey, after approximately 20 years as a chemical operator, and he also worked for several years in the Newark School System.
He was married to the late Lucille Phillips in 1960. Their union produced seven children: David Olive, Darryl Olive, Joseph Olive, John Olive, Delois Ann Olive, Deborah Olive, and Linda Olive.
Gary loved the Lord often shared his faith by including a small Bible in every greeting card he sent. He was known as a very happy, funny, and giving man who always greeted everyone with a hearty “Hellooo”. He loved going to church and attended many churches throughout his life.
Gary is survived by his two sisters, Euphrasia Douglas of Raleigh, NC, and Grace Olive of Fuquay-Varina, NC. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews to continue his legacy.
