Mr. James Merritt

08/15/1949 - 04/07/2026

Mr. James Merritt, more affectionately known as “Dead Eye,” was born on August 15, 1949, in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia, to the late Mrs. Gladys Payne Merritt and the late Mr. Jimmy Harrison Merritt, Sr.

He was educated in the public schools of Upson County and graduated from Drake High School, where he formed lifelong friendships. After high school, he worked briefly at Martha Mills before gaining employment with the Upson County Board of Education as a custodian. He loved his job and enjoyed working with the staff. In addition, he worked part-time at Belk, K-Mart, and washed cars at Trice Funeral Home.

In 1988, James met Ethel Jean Ellerbee, and the two were united in marriage on September 23, 1988. She was the love of his life, and together they built a strong and loving relationship.

Recognizing his need for a Savior, James confessed Christ and joined New Lincoln Park AME Church. He faithfully attended as long as his health permitted.

James was a founding member of the Strike-Rite Men's Club and a member of the Wrecking Crew. James left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He had a warm and pleasant personality that made people enjoy being in his presence. During his early years, he enjoyed working, playing golf, watching westerns, washing cars, spending time with family and friends, and helping others whenever he could.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Mamie Merritt and Virginia Merritt Westbrook; and three brothers, Jimmy Harrison Merritt, Jr., Frederick Merritt and Emmit Merritt.

On Tuesday, April 7, 2026, the Lord called his name. He answered, and his spirit went home to rest.
