Florence R McMullen

Passed 04/12/2026

A Life of Love Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Faithful Servant, Friend Florence Mae Robinson was born to Mr. Benjamin Robinson and Mrs. Willie Mae McDonald Robinson on June 23, 1929, in Jackson, Mississippi. She resided in Jackson, Mississippi throughout her life and passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Florence McMullen married her high school sweetheart, Mr. Clyde McMullen, in 1947. They were blessed with three children, Barbara, Patricia, and Clyde, Jr. She was a talented and caring woman throughout her life—a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She loved her God, her children, the professions in which she excelled, her philanthropy, and her flower gardening. She reminds us to: “Plant beauty wherever we can.” Early in her career, she became a licensed cosmetologist and owned and operated her own beauty salon—one of the few Black-owned salons at the time—providing employment opportunities for others. It was centrally located on John R. Lynch Street in Jackson, Mississippi. Her career of service continued as she became one of the first Black nurses at St. Dominic Hospital at its inception, now one of the top hospitals in Mississippi. She later completed her medical career at the Veterans Affairs Hospital. Florence retired from her profession, but never from service. Recognized by Pearl Street African Methodist Episcopal Church as a true trailblazer, she worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those around her. She led and organized numerous efforts, including trips for parents and children to Disney World; providing robes for the church choir; coordinating food and clothing drives to help relieve poverty-related hunger across Mississippi; and contributing over ten years of service to the Church Music Workshop at Jackson State University. She was also a devoted member of the Pearl Street AME Church Sanctuary Choir. Florence was an early participant in a new senior citizen program at Hinds Community College, where she assisted students with registration. Hers was truly a life well lived—marked by service, generosity, and enduring love. Mrs. Florence McMullen is now reunited in eternal rest with her beloved brothers, Eddie Robinson and Bennie Robinson, Jr.; her sister, Dorothy Ann Robinson George; her son, Clyde McMullen, Jr.; her daughter, Patricia Ann McMullen Williams; and her grandsons, Marence Daniel Anderson and Clyde McMullen, III. She is cherished and remembered by her loving family: one daughter, Barbara McMullen Anderson (Daniel); four granddaughters, Valerie Denise McMullen Ivory (Walter), Michelle Denise Smith Palmore (Trenny), Danielle Robynn Anderson, and Brittany Nicole McMullen Sampson; one grandson, Nicholas James Williams; one great-granddaughter, Chelsey Jenise Williams; one great-grandson, Jaydon Matthew Palmore; two great-great-grandsons, Chase Amari Green and Semaj Ryder Harrison; along with a large and loving family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends, all of whom she held close in her heart. Florence Mae Robinson McMullen is lovingly carried in God’s grace and forever held in our hearts. Well done, thou good and faithful servant… enter thou into the joy of thy Lord.
