Mary Jeannette Hughes, affectionately known as Granny, born on July 7, 1955, in Brunswick County, Virginia to Lizzie M. Huff and the late Sam J. House Sr. She departed this earthly life on June 9, 2018 at Duke University Medical Pavillion in Durham, NC with complications associated with Lupus. Mary accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age while attending her childhood church Meherrin Baptist Church. She was a member of The City while residing in Durham (Rougemont), NC. She would watch her church services online as her health declined. Mary was educated in the Brunswick County Public School System. She later attended Durham Technical Community College where she studied Early Childhood Development with this degree she taught preschool at Mt. Zion Christian Academy in Durham, NC. Mary also Studied at Central Texas College and was the Dietary Manager and a Med Tech at the Cantebury and Caswell House where she later retired from. Mary enjoyed doing what she loved best, helping others and being an awesome mother, granny and friend to all whom she came in contact . She loved doing activities and interacting with all family members. Mary's son Kevin Shaw preceded her in death and she leaves to cherish her loving memory two daughters Stephanie Harris (Vernon)of Durham and Sherrill Smith (Special Friend George)of Rougemont, a son Kirk Smith(Nakia), her mother Lizzie M. Huff, two sisters Mable McKnight of South Hill, VA, Lula Studivant(Lee) of LaCrosse, three brothers Sam House Jr.(Jeannette)of Brodnax, Thurman House(Antionette)of Chesterfield, Daniel House(Doreta) of Brodnax, thirteen grandchildren Shaiheed, Lourdes, Africa, Tarion,Katelynn, Elizabeth, Khalil, Talik, Leyla, Lester,Donovan, Aidan and Nadia, four uncles, three aunts and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. A special thanks to close family and friends Helen Connelly, Sherry Brann, Nicole Dempson, and Audrey Clements. Homegoing service will be on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at the The City Church, 2403 New Raleigh Hwy, Durham, NC at 12:00 noon, visitation at 11:00 am.
