Obituary For Walter 'Mercy D' Dawson

Walter Lee “Mercy Dee” Dawson, 67, transitioned on Thursday, September 6, 2018 at Durham VA Hospital. He is survived by three children one daughter, Danette Walker, Clinton, Maryland, two sons Corey (Angie) Dawson Raleigh, NC, and Brian (Dana) Dawson Durham, NC., and four grandchildren, Aaron, Jurni, Chase and Caleb Dawson. He leaves behind three brothers Jesse ( Cynthia )Dawson Stafford, VA, OKeith (Pecola) Mercer and Kevin Mercer Culpeper, VA. , one sister Sharon (Ed) Gray Culpeper, VA and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Home Going Service Update.... The celebration of life service for Walter Lee 'Mercy Dee' Dawson that was scheduled this Saturday, September 15th has been postponed due to inclement weather. Safety for our loved ones, family and friends are of importance and concern. The new date for Mercy Dee's Home Going service is Wednesday, September 19th at Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2200 S. Alston Ave., Durham, NC. Viewing will take place at 12 noon with the service beginning at 1:00 pm.

To The Dawson Family: A few weeks ago while listening to the radio, a deejay mentioned that Brian Dawson was not on air because of his father's death. I immediately knew they were talking about Mercy D because I was part of a group of students from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University that had the honor and privilege of documenting him for our Video Institute just a few months ago in June. Among the many stories and life lessons Mercy D shared with us while sitting in his home, he mentioned that he was the proud father of Brian Dawson. I can still remember when Mercy use to my Grandmother's hair!! She always say on goin to get my hair done by that fine man!! I was little then when I got older I ran into Mercy in a meeting and was tore up from the inside out but he was there with open arms and lots of knowledge!! Really gonna miss his warm and happy face!! He always would make jokes about himself not being able to see!! If there is anybody in the world that has so much joy and gratitude it was Mercy D!!
