Funeral service for Katie Hughley, 78, of Opelika, AL, will be at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, April 26, 2026, at St. Mark A.M.E. Church, 4141 Lee Road 162, Opelika, AL, 36801 with interment in Garden Hills Cemetery, 1218 Frederick Road, Opelika, AL, 36801, Reverend Jonathan Benton will officiate.
Mrs. Hughley, who passed away Thursday, April 16, 2026 at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, was born October 26, 1947, in Lee County, Alabama.
Public viewing will be Saturday, April 25, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Ms. Hughley will lie in repose at the church one hour prior to the service.
She leaves to cherish her memory: five children, Wanda (Gary) Kilgore of Riverdale, GA, Regina (Thomas) Preston of Cusseta, AL, Katherine Hughley (Cleave Morgan) of Opelika, AL, Fannie (Kurvin) Streeter of Montgomery, AL and Michelle Hughley of Cusseta, AL; fifteen grandchildren, Tomeika Hughley, Luevenia Hughley, LaBrande Hughley, LaTangela Carr, Calvin Hughley, Sufear Carr, Christopher (Turri) Hughley, Janataka Hughley-Holmes, Toneitha Hughley, Naesha Hughley, Tambra Hughey, Angena (Jeremy) Tisdell, Naequarious Hughley, Delesha Hughley, and Kearston McCants; forty-two great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; six brothers, Emmanuel Shorter, Jasper Shorter, Henry (Eloise) Shorter, Henry Clark all of Opelika, AL, Lorenzo (Wiltha) Haynes of Columbia, OH and Amos Haynes of Youngstown, OH; four sisters, Dorothy Parker of Opelika, AL, Geraldine (Joe) Tinsley of Opelika, AL, Elizabeth Hodge of Cincinnati, OH and Juanita Haynes of Cleveland, OH; one sister-in-law, Fannie Clark of Opelika, AL; three special nieces, Rosetta Shorter of Decatur, GA, Carrie Carr and Lillie Shorter both of Opelika, AL; seven special nephews, Lakeith Shorter, Derrick O’Neal, Brandon Foreman, Angelo Shorter, Tyrone Foreman, Anthony Foreman and Tony Tidwell; goddaughter, Sandra Hutchinson of Loachapoka, AL; five devoted friends, Lucille Dooley, Ida Lou Melton, Hazel Dowdell, Geraldine Bailey all of Opelika, AL and Florine Pitts of Loachapoka, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
