Mary Napp Linden passed away peacefully on April 9, 2026, surrounded by her husband of 46 years and their four children, following a courageous battle with a glioblastoma. She was a devoted wife, mother, and friend whose life was defined by deep faith, enduring kindness, and a quiet strength that touched all who knew her.
Mary was born on July 25, 1949, in Roscrea, Ireland, a town rich in history and tradition. From the very beginning, she shared an extraordinary and unbreakable bond with her twin sister, Ann, a connection that remained a defining part of her life. Mary and Ann were lovingly adopted by Dr. Louis and Reba Napp and raised on Long Island, New York, alongside their sister, Vivian, in a home filled with love, encouragement, and opportunity. Mary is survived by her sister, Vivian Weber.
Mary attended Amherst College and later earned her master’s degree from University of Connecticut before beginning her lifelong career in education and eventually making her home in North Carolina.
Mary was the beloved wife of Colonel Otto Gordon Linden, USMC (Ret.), with whom she built a life rooted in love, service, and unwavering commitment. Together, they created a home centered on faith, family, and strong values. Mary and Otto were steadfast to St. Paul Catholic Church, where they built lifelong friendships and a deep sense of fellowship. She was a proud and loving mother to her four children: Mathias Gordon Linden, Meredith Linden Murphy, Michael Ryan Linden (Shea), and Maureen Linden Clayton (Stephen). Mary found great joy in each of her children, offering steady encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love throughout their lives.
For 37 years, Mary dedicated herself to the classroom, where her heart truly belonged, especially in kindergarten. During her time at Ben Quinn Elementary School, she was honored as Teacher of the Year and received district-wide recognition for her innovative approaches to teaching math. While her professional accolades were numerous, her greatest joy was always her students. Mary had a remarkable gift for connecting with children, including those with unique challenges, meeting each one with patience, compassion, and understanding. Through her work, she impacted hundreds of lives, nurturing not only academic growth but also confidence and a sense of self-worth. Her legacy as an educator lives on in the countless students who were shaped by her care and belief in their potential.
Mary will be remembered for her gracious spirit, her compassion for others, and her devotion to her family. Her legacy lives on in the lives of her children and grandchildren; Philip, Harris, Huck, Oliver, Boland, Margot, and Merritt.
A service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held at St. Paul Catholic Church at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2026, with a reception to follow at New Bern Golf and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor her memory through donations to Craven County Partners in Education. The family would like to express a deep sense of gratitude for how well her friends cared for her in the final months of transition.
