Lawrence Young

Passed 05/05/2026

L. C. Young was born to the union of Damon and Lillie Young on January 27, 1949, in Marigold, Mississippi.

After attending Memphis City Schools, he graduated from The Booker T. Washington High in 1969, where he was a member of the Warriors Varsity Basketball Team.

Shortly after high school, L. C. enlisted into the United States Navy, and at that time he was informed that he was required to have a full name, not initials, and as a result, he selected Lawrence Charles. During his active-duty assignment, he earned a National Defense Service Medal for meritorious achievement. After his military assignment was completed, he attended Kentucky State University and in 1979 he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice.

L.C. cherished his faith, family, and friendships deeply. He had a profound love for the South Memphis community, often going out of his way to check on elderly neighbors and lend a helping hand wherever needed, from painting projects, small repairs, and lawn care. His favorite game was backgammon, and he loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Memphis State Tigers Men's basketball team.

An avid reader, L.C. had a daily routine to read the newspaper, staying well-informed about the latest political developments and community news. He was well-read and concerned about the world we lived in. His commitment to those around him and his passion for helping others will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him.

L. C. was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Damon and Lillie Young, and his siblings, Cleo Harris, Shirley Carter, Damon Young Jr., Crasie Young, A.C. Young, Robert Young, and Mildred Young. He is survived by his loving and supportive siblings, Carrie Roach, Joanie Williams, Betty Jones, Vera Ray, Willie E. Young, and Evelyn Young.

His fond memories will live on through his children, Lauren K. Young, Lawrence K. Young, Lowell K. Young, and Latoya K. Young; his granddaughters, Loreal K. Young and Laila K. Young; as well as many loving nieces, nephews, and extended family.
