OPELOUSAS – A Celebration of Life will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at Ford and Joseph Funeral Home for Mr. Joseph M. Charles, affectionately known as “Joe” by his family and friends, 83, who entered eternal rest on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at his residence in Opelousas, LA.

Mr. Charles was a member of Our Lady of Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Opelousas, LA. He was the first black florist in St. Landry Parish whereas he owned and operated Joe’s Flower Shop. Mr. Charles served as the Opelousas City Councilman of District E for 28 years. He also worked with St. Landry Parish Sheriff Department and the City of Opelousas Police Department.

Mr. Charles’ memories are being cherished by: his son, Kenneth Joseph Charles of Opelousas, LA; his daughter, Gwendolyn A. Charles-Washington (Anthony) of Opelousas, LA; three brothers, Wilton King, Jr., Ogden King and Howard Charles; five sisters, Audrey Bellard, Frances Jones, Louana Boutte, Eva Anthony and Bernadine Aggison; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by: his wife, Mary Randle Charles; one daughter, Angela Charles; his parents, Maurice Charles and Lucille Major King; and four siblings, Leroy Charles, Laudrie Phillip Charles, Mildred Castille and Mary Ethel Charles.
