Inez Wigfall Burgess was born on August 1, 1953, to the late Charlie and Lillie Nelson Wigfall in Berkeley County, South Carolina.
Inez was educated in the Berkeley County School system graduating from Cross High School in Cross, South Carolina. She moved to New York to live with relatives, and was joined in holy matrimony to Lester Burgess, Jr. This loving union brought the addition of a daughter, Vasante Burgess Varner.
On Monday, June 15, 2026, Inez silently departed this life with full assurance of the Lord's return and will live with him for eternity.
Inez worked at Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center in Orangeburg, New York for several years. Later she was employed with EFLS Telecommunications in New York City as a Communication Specialist Supervisor where she retired.
Inez was preceded in death by her siblings, Bobby Wigfall, Martha Wigfall, Mildren Green, Charlie Wigfall, Jr. and Rosa Bell Richardson.
Inez lived the true meaning of family and love and always stayed in constant contact with family and friends. Her family, friends and people in the community knew her for her feisty, witty, and no-nonsense personality. She was a great listener and gave sound advice. She was a loyal, loving person and great cook known for her amazing meatloaf, potato salad, and sweet potato pie.
Inez's memory will live on forever in the hearts and minds of those who loved her. She leaves behind her daughter, Vasante Burgess Varner, grandchildren, Jada Porch, Kai Whiten, and Carmelo Varner, Bronx, NY; loving brother, Dean Wigfall (Veronica) Manhattan, NY; honorary nephew, Celease Wigfall (Lori), Spotsylvania VA, niece, Vera Kirkwood (Fred), Columbia, SC; aunts, Neomi Milligan, Ethel Lee Nelson; uncle, Enoch Nelson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Inez will be missed by the many lives she has touched. Her legacy and gifts will continue to be a blessing to all that knew and loved her.
