Stella Louise Tucker
03/21/1948 - 07/04/2026
Just mention STELLA KNOX TUCKER to anyone who has ever met her and their first thoughts are how sweet she is and how she would do anything for you. Soon after being in her presence, you knew you were with an exuberant conversationist who was a kind and selfless Christian woman. Stella believed "life is all about choices," and she chose to live a life of graceful humility. She never sought the spotlight but instead thought nothing of sacrificing her own desires for the sake of others. Stella gave unceasingly until she departed this life on July 4, 2026. Born in 1948 in Batesville, Mississippi, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Stella celebrated her birthday on March 2. Stella's birthdate on official records, however, is March 21 because of a midwife's unclear documentation of whether Stella was born on March 2 or March 1. Regardless of the date, the world was blessed with an angel when Stella was born as the first of five children to Willie Earl and Isabell Knox. Stella's siblings, James, Willie, Larry, Janet, and Cathy, preceded her in death. Stella graduated from Douglas High School in Memphis, Tennessee. She received her bachelor's degree from Memphis State University and her Master of Arts in Education at the University of Northern Colorado, a premiere teachers' college with an innovative program for full-time working teachers. Stella's spiritual formation and baptism into her Christian faith began in childhood at First Baptist Church Mount Olive in Memphis, Tennessee. She met her future husband, George Tucker, one night while directing the choir there. Captivated by her French roll and large, bright eyes, George found a 'good thing' that day. Stella and George married on June 25, 1967. Three children, Sean, Brownsyne, and Cullen were born to their union. As a mother, Stella exemplified the teachings of Dorothy Law Nolte's poem, "Children Learn What They Live." The Tuckers moved from Nashville, Tennessee, to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1977. Stella became a devoted member of Ben Hill United Methodist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Cornelius Henderson. At Ben Hill, she established and led the Girl Scout Brownies for many years. Later she attended Cascade United Methodist Church during Rev. Walter Kimbrough's tenure. Her walk with Christ eventually led her to Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where she first went to support a widowed friend's return to fellowship. Before long, her love for this church community inspired her to become an active part of it for nearly 25 years. After moving to Indianapolis, Indiana, to live with her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughter, Stella attended Northside New Era Baptist Church. Stella was a dedicated teacher, a favorite with her students. In Nashville, she was a special education teacher at Providence School. In Atlanta, she was a dedicated member of the science department at Sylvan High School. She retired from teaching to manage her husband's medical practice. A charter member of the Hendersonville Area (TN) Chapter of Links, Inc., Stella transferred to the Dogwood City (GA) Chapter in 1977. She also was a member of The Auxiliary to the Atlanta Medical Association. She enjoyed taking trips and participating in activities with the Jolly Bunch of St. Paul of the Cross Roman Catholic Church. Stella loved travelling with her family and with her best friend, Rhynette. She travelled all over the United States, to Canada, the Caribbean, China, and Italy. Although Stella enjoyed the cuisine of the places she visited, her favorite restaurant was Cracker Barrel. Other favorites of Stella were Southern Living magazines, cookbooks, and the Daily Bread devotional. Her favorite place in an airport was the rack of tourist brochures and maps. Most of all, Stella loved God's word. She loved God's people, and they loved her in return. Stella always focused on the good, finding joy in small wonders like the budding of an orchid. She always looked for what was 'right' with a person rather than what was wrong. She saw possibilities in people and showed genuine curiosity and concern about everyone she met. She was warmth and kindness personified, simply radiating God's light and love in a palpable way felt by all she encountered. Stella leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Dr. George Tucker; her children, Dr. George Sean Tucker (Kenyetta); Dr. Brownsyne Tucker Edmonds (Joseph); and George Cullen Tucker (Leslie); her grandchildren, Zora, Lauren, Brennan, and Lincoln; her niece, Jessica Aytchan; her best friend, Rhynette Northcross Hurd; and a host of family members and devoted friends. Stella will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Funeral Home & Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee. Memorial gifts are invited through IU Health Foundation.
