Funeral services will be Saturday, July 13, 2019 at 12:00 noon, Union Hill M.B. Church, 4659 MS 22, Flora, MS with burial in Andrew Chapel Church Cemetery, 2426 Virilia Road, Flora, MS.

H.L. (Jerry) Sumler, Jr. was born on July 26, 1958, to the late Katie Bell Sumler and H.L. Sumler, Sr. of Flora, MS. He accepted Christ at an early age and united with the Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Flora, MS. He loved, cherished and visited his family church Andrew Chapel M.B. Church, Flora, MS. He graduated from East Flora High School in 1976 in Flora, MS. With a great love and aspiration for his country, as a young man, H.L. later known as (Jerry), joined the United States Armed Forces upon graduation. On June 29, 1976, H.L. enlisted into the United States Army as a LT Specialist 93B10 – Food Service Specialist, with the AHC, 1st Bn 50th Inf, S2 Armored Division. Jerry served oversees in Germany from March 14, 1978, until September 1978. He was relieved from active duty on June 28, 1979. After returning home from his military duties, H.L. (Jerry) Sumler, was joined into holy matrimony to the late Sandra Davis Sumler. To this union three children were raised. With a continued desire to serve this country, H.L. (Jerry) Sumler continued his military career by joining the U.S. Navy as a MSS (Mass Specialist Seaman) on the USS Spiegel Grove (LSD-32) from July 07, 1980 until July 6, 1982. He received the Meritorious Unit Commendation, Battle “E” Ribbon. H.L. (Jerry) Sumler, Jr. departed this life on Thursday, July 4, 2019 at 9:30 pm at the University Medical Center, Jackson, MS. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Premarie Sumler and Argrille Michelle Sumler. He loved to cook, barbeque, talk and spend time with his family. Jerry was a very good cook. He worked at Morrison Cafeteria, Stewpot Community Services, Piccadilly and Cracker Barrel. He later worked at the Dollar General Store in Flora, MS, where he was known and loved by many. He loved spending time with his special friend, Viola King, Flora, MS and with his “homeboys” as he called them, Johnny Weathersby, Sylvester Lewis and many others (most of whom was his classmates and childhood friends). He leaves to cherish his memories three sons: Preston (Tomeka) Davis of Byram, MS; Jerriel (Stephanie) Sumler and Garrick Sumler of Jackson, MS; three sisters: Elmira (Birtnell) Denson of West Palm Beach, FL; Pastor Linda (Pastor Paul) Ge’Julus of Port St. Lucie, FL; and Rosie Lee Smith of Jackson, MS; three brothers: Leonard “Ray” (Elise) Sumler of Jackson, MS, Curtis “CC” (Charlisha) Sumler of Marina, CA and Robert Earl Hayes, Detroit, MI; 11 grandchildren: Azhia, Princess, Preston Jr., Marcellous, Kaleb, Londyn, Addalyn, Arial, Bralen, Sandra and Ivey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
