Obituary For Roxana Coleman

Funeral service for Mrs. Roxana Coleman will be conducted 11:00 AM Saturday, July 20, 2019 at Mt. Pleasant AME Church, 1800 Vista Lane, Lynchburg. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery, directed by Smith Funeral Home of Florence, LLC.

Mrs. Roxana Coleman, the daughter of the late Helia and Carry Durant wasborn in 1922 in Lynchburg, South Carolina. She left this earthly life to return to the open arms of her Creator, Jesus the Christ on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 peacefully at the age of 96.

Mrs. Coleman attended the Public Schools in Sumter County.

Mrs. Coleman joined Mount Pleasant African Methodist Episcopal Church in Lynchburg, South Carolina at an early age after accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior and was baptized. In the church, she worked and served in various positions. Her greatest passion was for ministry through mission. Her spiritual growth was especially enhanced and nurtured through reading God’s word.

Mrs. Coleman was joined in holy matrimony to the late Harold McKnight. To this union were born three sons: Eddie McKnight, the late William “Son” McKnight and the late Joseph “Pete” McKnight. She later married the late Willard Coleman.

Mrs. Coleman known as Big Mama” to her grandchildren, raised two families; was a farmer; worked at Campbell Soup Company in Sumter, South Carolina; Sumter Laundry in Sumter, South Carolina; and Levy Park Community Adult Center in East Florence Community in Florence, South Carolina, until she retired in 2005.

She was a faithful attendant of Savannah Grove Adult Day Care Center.

Mrs. Coleman was preceded in death by her parents, Helia and Carry Durant; her husbands, Harold McKnight and Willard Coleman; two sons, William “Son’ McKnight and Joseph “Pete” McKnight; and five siblings, Reverend Julius “JC” Durant, Emma Sharper, Marion “Mack” Durant, Larry Durant, and Mozell McKnight.

Mrs. Coleman leaves to cherish her precious memories: her son, Eddie (Elizabeth) McKnight of Acushnet, Massachusetts; two grandsons, Winfred McKnight of Florence, South Carolina and Harold (LaShawn) McKnight of Woodbridge, Virginia; two granddaughters, Rushie (Rickey) Lewis of Upper Marlboro, Maryland and Kena McKnight of Fort Washington, Maryland; grandmother to =fteen grandchildren; several great grand children; numerous great great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Lillie Bell Durant, Freddie Mae Durant, and Elease McKnight; one daughter-in-law, Claretha McKnight; and a host of nephews; nieces; other relatives; church family; and friends.

Family visitation will be 6:00 – 7:00 PM Friday, July 19, 2019 at J. O. & Annette Smith Memorial Chapel, 307 S. John St., Florence.
