Mrs. Anna Doris Smoak, affectionately known as “Doris”, was born May 1, 1938 in Bennettsville, South Carolina to the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Ware.
At an early age Doris accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Bennettsville. She was educated in Marlboro County Schools and Laurinburg Industrial Institute. She went on to receive her Bachelor of Science Degree at Fayetteville State and her Masters Degree in Elementary Education from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. She was a special education teacher for over 30 years.
Doris was a devoted wife to the late Henry Bernard Smoak and to this union, they had two children: Sharon and the late Henri Bernard Smoak. After marriage, she joined Mount Pisgah AME Church, where she was a member of the senior choir and served on the usher board. Doris always enjoyed decorating the church for various functions. She was a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her favorite pastimes were shopping, planting flowers, listening to music and collecting recipes. She leaves to cherish her fond memories, her devoted daughter, Sharon (Robert) Smoak Thompson; stepdaughter, Antonette Hyman; daughter-in-law, Wanda Glover Smoak; three sisters: Georgia Ware, LaFragia Jackson and Jacqueline Ware; three granddaughters: Tate’Anna Thompson, Andraya Smoak and Alexandria Smoak; two nephews: Charles Douglas and Timothy Douglas; three grandnieces/nephew: LaTia, Timothy Jr. and Jakia; and a host of family, friends, and special friend of the family Rene’ Whittaker.
Mrs. Smoak will be placed in the church one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Smoak passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at the residence of her daughter Sharon Smoak Thompson in Hendersonville, Tennessee.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 27, 2019 from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. The Delta Sigma Theta Omega Omega service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory of Orangeburg.
