Trustee Thomas Lamar Chavis, son of the late Charlie F. Chavis and Mattie Davis Chavis was born May 28, 1947 in Mecklenburg County, Virginia and departed this life suddenly, August 5, 2019 in VCU-Community Memorial Hospital, South Hill, VA.

At an early age he was baptized at St. Luke #2 Baptist Church, South Hill, VA. He later joined Penuel RZUA Church where he was a Trustee.

Thomas was a 1966 graduate of the former East End High School. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army serving his country until he was honorably discharged as a SGT on October 30, 1972.

He was married to Annie Garnes and to this union two children were born.

Thomas was employed by Jones Electric Company for over 25 years until his retirement.

On July 27, 2018 he married Barbara Ann Phillips.

In his spare time Thomas loved to sit in his recliner, crossing his legs and talking trash. He also enjoyed taking his wife out to eat often especially at Wilson’s Bros. Barbecue. He adored mentoring his nieces and nephews because he was like a father figure to them.

Thomas leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife- Barbara Ann Chavis of the home; three children- Kimberlin (Dennis) Neblett of Stem, NC; Keith Chavis of Brodnax, VA and Tedra (Donnie) Baskerville of Chesterfield, VA; step-son, Lamont Phillips of South Hill, VA; step-daughter, Carolyn Engers of Skipwith, VA; six grandchildren- Tiara and Shayla Chavis, DeAndrea’ and Damiyan Baskerville, Dennis “BJ” Neblett III, and Natalia Moore; six step-grandchildren- Shawn Mayo, Kasim and Nakita Engers, Donnesha Smith, special and very devoted- Alexis and DeAndre’ Phillips; seven step great-grandchildren; two sisters- Martha Sallie of Philadelphia, PA and Lou Ethel Coleman (Andrew Grant) of South Hill, VA; brother- Lloyd Chavis of Brooklyn, NY; nine sisters-in-law, Tina (Paul) Williams, Charlene (Marsha) Crenshaw, Florence Keeling, Sarah (James) Fleming, Vernice Freeman, Sandra, Mamie, Edith, and Lena Chavis; three brothers-in-law, Eddie (Chris) Sturdivant, Robert (Viola) Sturdivant, and Lee (Nellie) Neblett; devoted friends- Virginia Alexander, James and Mary Holmes, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Thomas favorite saying was “I’m off on Mondays. I do absolutely what I want to do, and the family knows what I mean when I say, ABSOLUTELY…”
