Obituary For Mrs. Hattie Geneva Frazier Summers

Funeral services for Mrs. Hattie Geneva Frazier Summers, 77, of 201 Pinnacle Drive, Columbia, SC, will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 20, 2019 at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1785 Amelia St., Orangeburg, SC, with entombment to follow in Crestlawn Memorial Gardens. The Reverend Todd Brown is officiating.

During the early morning of September 15th, at the Lexington Medical Center, Hattie Geneva (Frazier) Summers was called to her heavenly home at the age of 77.

She was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina on June 1, 1942. She inherited all of the loving characteristics of her mother, Ezilvia Frazier Johnson Mack who was affectionately known as ‘Daughter Frazier’. Hattie had nine siblings, seven of which preceded her in death.

She was educated in Orangeburg County schools and graduated from George Washington Carver High School. She joined the Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully until she moved to New York after graduation. She was the loyal and devoted wife of George Summers for 54 years of marriage. It was very common to see her walking, hand-in-hand, with the love of her life. She traveled the world with her husband while he served in the United States Air Force. Her travels included Germany, Texas, Bermuda, Italy, and Washington DC, before returning to Orangeburg after her husband’s retirement. She recently moved to Columbia South Carolina shortly before her death.

Although she only had one son, Derrick Summers, she served as a “mother figure” to many. She never met a stranger and was always willing to listen to others or lend a helping hand. Whether she was making people laugh with her quick wit, making people stare by wearing her fancy suits and hats, or helping individuals through tough times, her service to God, her family and her community were a shining example of her Christian beliefs and zest for life.

She will be sadly missed by loving immediate and extended family members including:

her loving husband, George Summers of the home; her loyal and devoted son, Derrick Summers of Indianapolis, Indiana; two loving sisters: Frances (Nelson) Summers of Sumter, South Carolina and Minister St Claire Franklin of Cambria Heights, New York; a special nephew, Walter (Felecia) Busby of Columbia, South Carolina; two god-daughters: Algean (Albert) Isaac of Cope, South Carolina and Rose Marie Guinyard of Cordova, South Carolina; two special cousins: Ethel Mosely of Orangeburg, South Carolina and Mattie (Eddie) Nelson of Columbia South Carolina; and a host of loving nieces; nephews; cousins and friends.

Mrs. Summers will be placed in the church one hour prior to service.

**In honor of Mrs. Summers, the family respectfully ask that all ladies wear hats to the funeral.

A Wake and visitation will be held, Thursday, September 19, 2019 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. at Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory, Orangeburg.

Friends may call at the residence of her husband and son, Mr. George Henry Summers and Mr. Derrick Summers, 201 Pinnacle Drive, Columbia, SC or Simmons Funeral Home and Crematory of Orangeburg.
