Obituary For Shirley Mae Russell

MS. Shirley Mae Russell, more affectionately known as “Scotty,” was born on November 7, 1955, to the late Mrs. Rosa Lee Ellerbee Russell and the late Mr. Wesley Russell in Thomaston, Upson County, Georgia. At an early age, she joined the Fellowship Baptist Church. Her early education was in the Thomaston public Schools. She graduated from R.E. Lee Institute. She attended nursing school and earn her LPN and found employment at Spalding Regional Medical Center. Shirley was always studying and advancing her education. She earn her B S Degree in Psychology, her Master’s Degree in Human Services from the University of Phoenix. She was employed by the United Postal Service, a substitute teacher in the Spalding County School System, and a writer for the Thomaston Times. She was currently employed with the City of Thomaston. Shirley was the mother of three children. After the passing of her siblings, she helped raised one niece and three nephews. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and was actively involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives. Shirley was a member of the City of Refuge Church where she traveled on mission trips to Jamaica. She enjoyed her mission work. She was also active in her community. She was a former member of the Thomaston Toast Master, a volunteer with the Heritage Pregnancy Center, a member of the Executive Board of I.S.S.U.E. S, and was serving as the First Vice President of the NAACP. During her spare time, she enjoyed shopping, going to the hairdresser, going to church, traveling, spending time with her family and eating out. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Geneva Russell and Rose Russell and one brother, O.W. Alsobrooks. On Thursday, September 26, 2019, the Lord called her home from labor to reward. She peacefully went home to rest. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She leaves to cherish her memory, seven children, Ms. Anastasia Johnson, Ms. Kimberly Johnson both of Thomaston, GA, Mr. Michael Barron of Charlotte, NC, Mr. Larry(Beverly) Brown of Yatesville, GA, Ms. Pamela Brown, Mr. Demetrius Russell, and Mr. Montae (Kenya) Russell all of Thomaston, GA; one grandson she raised as her own, Mr. Traquavius Johnson; sixteen other grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren; two devoted friends, Ms. Belinda Martin of Columbus, GA and Ms. Nancy Chaney of Thomaston, GA; a devoted cousin, Ms. Patricia Miller of Thomaston, GA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends who all will miss her dearly.
