Obituary For Elisha C. Lawler

Funeral services for Mr. Elisha C. Lawler, 74, will be 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2019 at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church. Dr. Horace L. Patterson is the pastor. Reverend Nathaniel Ashley will be the eulogist. Interment will be in Lawler Cemetery. Mr. Lawler will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Elisha C. Lawler was born on Thursday, October 5, 1944 to the late Elisha Lawler, Sr. and the late Elizabeth Oden Lawler in Talladega, Alabama.

Mr. Lawler accepted Christ at an early age and united with Apostolic Church of God. Upon relocating to Detroit, he united with Gaudy Memorial Church of God in Christ and Anointing Word Church of God in Christ once he moved to Atlanta, Georgia. Elisha was a graduate of R. R. Moton High School. After the completion of his education, he enlisted in the United States Army on September 3, 1965 and served honorably until September 1, 1967. He was employed with Republic Steel Mill, Ford Motor Co., Metropolitan Detroit Airport, Sam’s Club and retired from General Motors. He also worked as a tax professional. On May 10, 1975, Elisha married the former Gennise Strickland and they remained in holy covenant until his passing. Elisha accepted the Master’s call on Friday, October 4, 2019 while he was a patient at Emory University Hospital. He was preceded in passing by his son, Corey Denard Lawler; his parents, Elisha and Elizabeth Lawler; grandparents, David and Mary Lawler, and Henry and Sammie Oden; Godfather, Herman Terrell; mother-in-law, Olivia Strickland; brother-in-law, Willie Strickland; and close friends, Frank and Brenda Burton.

He leaves to mourn his passing: his wife of 44 years, Gennise S. Lawler of Lithonia, Georgia; a daughter, Gwen (Quinton) Payne of Birmingham, Alabama; two sons, Lasteveius Lawler of Sacramento, California and Isaac Lawler, Sr. of Lithonia, Georgia; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild; five sisters, Mary Hall, Dorothy Lawler, Rosa (Reverend Nathaniel) Ashley and Lutisha Turner of Talladega, Alabama and Glenda Dykes of McDonough, Georgia; six brothers, Johnny C. (Rosie Nell) Lawler of Talladega, Alabama, Earl (Audrey) Lawler of Mableton, Georgia, Arthur (Barbara) Lawler of Anniston, Alabama, Jeremiah Lawler of Atlanta, Georgia, Harry (Lorraine) Lawler of Talladega, Alabama and Steve (Malaine) Pope of Millerville, Alabama; father-in-law, Willie James Strickland; Godmother, Ernestine Terrell; two God sisters, Dr. Lestrita Terrell-Chappell and Dr. Hellenna Terrell; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
