Obituary For Mr. Melvin "Bud" Butler

Mr. Melvin “Bud” Butler, 72, passed away Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Wake Forest Baptist Health High Point Medical Center. He was born March 14, 1947 to the late Marvin Staton and Mary Butler. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Ann Oliver.

Who was this man, named Melvin Butler? “Bud” as he was affectionately known by his William Penn High School Tigers, Class of 1965, was a legend in his own right. He was sought after by numerous college recruiters for his natural skilled abilities in basketball. Bud was an all-conference, all-star basketball legend. There were many basketball records broken and new ones made that remain unbroken until this day. As a young man, Bud was inspired by his uncles in the hand skills of home improvement. He became a Master in masonry crafts and later enhanced it with concrete finishing skills. Bud was a phenomenal cook and was known for his “spread of flavors covering the table”. Bud was a mentor to so many young, old and in between.

He was not a biological father, but a father and grandfather to many. He will be remembered and sorely missed by all who knew him.

Melvin leaves to cherish his memories his special love, Ms. Kathy LeGrande of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Wilson, Mrs. Bessie (James) Linton and Mrs. Carolyn (William) Little all of High Point, NC; one special uncle, Earl (Maggie) Butler of High Point; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends.

The family sends special love and thanks to Pete Boyce and Frank Dorsett for the loving care during his time of illness.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, 716 Leonard Avenue. Interment will follow at Carolina Biblical Gardens. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.

Final arrangements are entrusted to Phillips Funeral Service, Inc.
