She graduated from Dillon High School in Dillon, South Carolina in the class of 1980. Later, she pursed her education at Columbia Junior College, Columbia, South Carolina.
Joann enjoyed playing softball from an early age which was a sports that her grandmother instilled in most of her children and grandchildren. To know Joann was to love her. She was a quiet, laid back person who always loved to be herself.
She was preceded in death by her mother: Docia Graves Allison, grandparents: Willie Boyd and Colleen Clark Graves, brother: Lewis Stevenson Ford.
