Walter B. "Poo Choo" Allen

With deepest sorrow we announce the passing of Mr. Walter B. “Poo Choo” Allen.

Mr. Walter B. Allen, affectionately known as “Poo Choo” was born December 28, 1945 to the late Mr. Raymond Allen, Sr. & Mrs. Stannie B. Allen in Gadsden, AL, He was educated in the Gadsden City School system and was a proud graduate of Carver High School, Class of 1965. He attended the Gadsden Vocational Trade School, he worked at Republic Steel/Gulf State Steel plant and retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber after 34 years of service. On September 3, 1983, he was united in Holy Matrimony with Diretha A. Griffin

Walter confessed faith in Christ at an early age, joining Mount Zion Baptist Church, East Gadsden, under the pastorate of Rev. Charlie Steele. He later joined Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. H. L. Spruill, where he served in the choir, on the usher board and as a trustee, until his health began to fail. After an extended illness, Walter departed this life in the early morning hours of Monday, March 2nd at Coosa Valley Health and Rehab.

Poo Choo was known for his love of sports, playing baseball, and flag football. He was an avid gardener, who took great pride in the meticulous care of his yard. He also enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond, Sr.; his mother, Stannie; brothers Raymond, Jr. and Stanley; sisters Mary, Elizabeth and Clara; son, Jeffery; and grandson, Jared.

Left to cherish his memories are his loving and devoted wife and care-giver, Diretha; son, Malcolm Allen of Chicago, IL; daughters, Cathy (Bernard) Green of Birmingham, AL; Jacqueline (James) Sibby of Charlotte, NC; son, Howard (Yolanda) Griffin, Jr. of Southside, AL; grandchildren, Javier Sibby of Charlotte, NC, Gabriel (Olivia) Griffin of Tulsa, OK, Jalen Griffin of McKenzie, TN and Janiah Griffin of Gadsden, AL; great granddaughter, Journi Sibby of Bronx, NY; brother, Theodore (Frances) Allen of Gadsden, AL; sister-in-law, Robbie Jean Allen of Montgomery, AL; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Funeral Service: 1:30 PM, Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church - 408 N. 9th Street - Gadsden, AL 35901
