Eleanor Marie Whitworth
July 23, 1945 – February 14, 2026

Eleanor Marie Whitworth transitioned peacefully on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at Rutherford Regional Hospital, following an extended illness. Though our hearts are heavy, we celebrate a life beautifully lived — a life marked by intelligence, independence, resilience, and quiet strength.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Ulysses G. Whitworth, Sr. and Elizabeth Hines Whitworth, and her devoted brother, Dr. Ulysses G. Whitworth. Their legacy of strength, education, and perseverance lived on powerfully through her.

Eleanor leaves to cherish her precious memory her sister-in-law, Ellen Whitworth; her former sister-in-law, Elaine Whitworth; her nieces, Njeri Whitworth, Shaina Whitworth, and Elizabeth Whitworth; her nephews, Haile Whitworth and John Owusu; her great-nephew, Tariq Dillard, and his wife, Cierra Dillard; her great-niece, Avauni Manago; and her great-great-niece, Evie Mae Dillard. She also leaves a host of cousins, extended family members, lifelong friends, and community connections who were blessed to experience her wisdom and unmistakable presence.

She was also the proud and devoted “mother” to her beloved pets, Izod and Harley, who were more than companions — they were her babies. They brought her daily laughter, loyal companionship, and immeasurable comfort.

Eleanor was a proud graduate of Carver High School in Spindale, North Carolina, and attended Tuskegee University (formerly Tuskegee Institute) in Tuskegee, where she majored in Physical Education.

Her professional journey reflected both ambition and courage. Eleanor’s career moved her across several cities, beginning in Columbia, where she began building her professional foundation. She later relocated to Pittsburgh, continuing to expand her expertise. Her path then led her to Asheville and subsequently to Durham, where she further developed her distinguished career spanning physical therapy, forestry with the federal government, and telecommunications.

Eleanor dedicated many years of service to GTE and later Verizon, earning respect for her professionalism, discipline, and excellence. She approached every role with competence and confidence, leaving a lasting impression wherever she served.

After retirement, Eleanor made a full-circle return to her family home in Spindale. Coming home was both intentional and meaningful — a continuation of her deep commitment to family legacy and stewardship. Retirement did not slow her down. Instead, she continued to serve her community as a substitute teacher and mentor to children. She also began a new chapter as a Tax Expert with H&R Block.

Eleanor was a true health enthusiast long before it became a trend. She took pride in maintaining her wellness and encouraged others to do the same. She managed the family property with diligence, and an unwavering sense of responsibility — always protecting legacy.

Her sharp wit, confident stride, and personality made her unforgettable. Eleanor lived life on her own terms — fiercely independent, resilient in every season, and grounded in quiet strength.

Her legacy is one of perseverance and family pride. Though she has transitioned from this earthly life, her voice, her lessons, and her light will continue to live on in all who knew and loved her.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Eleanor’s life will be arranged in the coming days. Service details are forthcoming and will be shared with family, friends, and the community once finalized.

She will be deeply missed, forever cherished, and always remembered.

Honoring her wishes, Eleanor will be cremated. The family will gather to celebrate her life in Spindale, North Carolina. Details will be shared with family and friends as plans are finalized.
