Deacon James Malcolm Fredrick, Sr. was born on August 13, 1946, in Allendale County. He was the son of the late Willie Fredrick and the late Anna Ash Fredrick Hicks.

He was educated at C.V. Bing School, Allendale, South Carolina.

Later in life, he sought and developed a closer relationship with God. He became a devoted member of Emmanuel RMUE Church, where he was later ordained as a Deacon. He also attended New Beginning Outreach Ministry under the leadership of Pastor Leonora Baggs. On March 24, 2024, he fully gave his life to Christ.

In 1964, Deacon Fredrick married the love of his life, the former Hazel Simpson. At the young ages of 17 and 18, the couple relocated to Fort Lauderdale, where they began building their life together. In July 1966, they were blessed with their first son. During this time, he worked in lawn maintenance with Sun CoSat Lawn Care before later joining his brother’s lawn care business.

Eventually, he returned home to South Carolina to help care for his brothers and sisters while his mother worked as a midwife in Charleston. He worked various jobs before beginning employment at the plant in Allendale, South Carolina. In 1969, he and Hazel welcomed a daughter into their family, and around 1970, they were blessed with another daughter.

In 1982, he began working at BASF Corporation Fibers Division (Bardiche) in Allendale, South Carolina, where he later received a
Ten-Year Service Award. On January 1, 1990, he earned a Twelve-Year Perfect Attendance Certificate. Between 1992 and 1995, the plant transitioned from Bardiche to Queen’s Carpet. During this season of life, four more children were added to the family. After Queen’s Carpet closed, the facility was acquired by Shaw Industries in August 1998.

Entrepreneurship was also a part of his journey. Around 1978, he owned and operated “The Fredrick’s Café” and later established “The Fairfax Seafood Market,” which he and his family operated for sixteen years before selling the business.

Deacon Fredrick faithfully served his community as a Volunteer Firefighter in Fairfax after returning home from Florida. His dedication
earned him several honors, including a Bravery Award, a Fifteen-Year Service Award (1985–2000), and a Twenty-Year Service Award (1984–2004).

He also worked as a newspaper carrier for The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, beginning in 1978 in Fairfax, and later delivered the News and Courier in Allendale, South Carolina.

He was an active member of the NAACP, a Mason, and a member of the Barton Ranger Hunting Club.

In his spare time, he enjoyed shrimping in St. Helena Island alongside Buck Cooler, whom he considered a brother for more than thirty years.

Deacon James Malcom Fredrick, Sr. leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, service, entrepreneurship, and love for family and community that will forever be remembered by all who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, William Henry Fredrick and Elizabeth Fredrick. Shakespeare Ash and Carolina Ash; (4) Brothers: George Fredrick, William Fredrick, Melvin Fredrick, and Herbert Lee Fredrick; (4) Sisters: Willie Mae Fredrick – Penn, Betty Ann Fredrick–Sanders, Elizabeth Fredrick – Eaton, and Carolyn Fredrick–Young–Idy; (3) Aunts: Sadie Ash, Geneva Brown, and Jannie King.

The floodgates of eternal life opened, and God has called one of his leaders home to be with him on May 21, 2026, in the comfort of his daughter’s home at 08:06 P.M.
