Elder Doretha Gail Mebane Walker

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Elder Doretha Gail (MeBane) Walker, affectionately known to family and friends as “Retha,” “Dee Dee,” “Auntie,” and lovingly known as “Momma D.” Doretha completed her earthly journey on July 13, 2026, at the age of 64.

Born on September 15, 1961, in Knoxville, Tennessee, Doretha was one of the cherished daughters of the late Elizabeth Ann MeBane and the late Percy Dave MeBane. Throughout her life, she touched countless hearts through her compassion, unwavering faith, and caring spirit.

Doretha dedicated more than 30 years of her life to the nursing profession. She was an exceptional nurse who cared for her patients with kindness, dignity, and genuine compassion. Nursing was more than a career to her—it was her calling, and she faithfully served others with a generous heart.

Above all else, Doretha loved the Lord. Her faith in God was the foundation of her life and a source of strength that carried her through every season. She also found great joy in cheering on her Tennessee Vols, traveling to new places, and spending precious time with those she loved.

Those who knew Doretha will remember her for her courage, kindness, sense of humor, strength, and generosity. She had a remarkable ability to make others feel loved, welcomed, and encouraged. Her beautiful spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who was blessed to know her. To her family, Retha was a source of love, laughter, and unwavering support. Her smile could brighten a room; her laughter was contagious, and she had a way of making everyone feel welcome. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.

Doretha leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Patricia “Peaches” Nicole Walker; her chosen children, Sandora Ramsey, Lillian Lay, and Frank Walker, whom she loved as her own; Her uncle; Curtis Lane and her siblings, David (Nicole) MeBane, Patricia Benn, and Brandie MeBane (Raaphell Mayes) & Dwayne Benn; her cherished nieces and nephews, Kevin Walker, Dee Benn, Doretha Benn, Elizabeth Benn, Tra’vi’s Fine, Chris (Allison) Cook, Kristin MeBane, Percy MeBane, David MeBane, and Eli Evans; Three great-nieces and four great-nephews; along with extended family members, dear friends, and all whose lives she touched.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elizabeth Ann MeBane and Percy Dave MeBane, and her sister, Mary Katherine MeBane.

Although our hearts are saddened by her passing, we find comfort in knowing that Doretha’s faith has become sight and that she now rests peacefully in the presence of her Lord and Savior. Her legacy of love, compassion, faith, and selfless service will continue to inspire all who knew her.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. John Showalter of Summit Medical Group and the nurses and caregivers of the Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center Medical-Surgical Unit for the compassionate care, kindness, and support they provided to Doretha and her family.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 23, 2026 from 6-6:30 p.m. with the Celebration of Life Service to begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Unity Mortuary Chapel.
