In honor of a blessed, spiritual, loyal, and loving woman, Lois P. Dixon, a native of Badin, North Carolina, daughter of the late Mr. Frank Patterson and the late Mrs. Anna Lipscomb Patterson, was born on October 1, 1935. She was the last of 13 children from that union.

When she was 14, she moved to Alexandria, Virginia, to attend the historical Parker Gray School. After graduation, she attended Winston-Salem Teachers College, where she earned a B.S. in Education. She was part of a small group of women tasked with integrating the Alexandria City Public Schools, where she was a celebrated elementary school teacher for more than 35 years. She loved being an educator, enriching the lives of many children.

In 1958, she married Samuel L. Dixon, Jr., and a year later, she was blessed with her one and only child, Kim Novet Dixon.

Lois joined Alleyne AME Zion Church in 1965 under the leadership of her brother, the Reverend William M. Patterson. She was very dedicated to her church, serving as a missionary, the Buds of Promise Superintendent, President of the Lay Council, a class leader, and Trustee. She contributed so much to Alleyne as a member, giving her tithes and offerings and supporting many in achieving their dreams and building successful futures.

In her free time, she loved to travel, attending many conventions and experiencing new opportunities with her sister and best friend, Barbara, across the globe. She loved embracing her creative side with reading and producing art. She had a strong sense of adventure, which she revisited each time she watched her favorite Westerns, such as Gunsmoke and Cheyenne, on television.

One of her best words of wisdom was “Good better best never let it rest until you’re good, is you’re better, and you’re better is your best.” We will continue to be our best for her.

Lois is now peacefully in heaven, reunited with her siblings, her dear husband, and her beloved daughter. She leaves behind her two granddaughters, Jennifer and Nadia Berry; her primary caretaker and niece, Ellanor J. Peck; and her supportive family: John, Anna, and Jonathan. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Terry Patterson, Lexie Bennett, and Ruth Dixon; her brothers-in-law, Moses and Pete Dixon; and numerous family members, godchildren, and friends.

We miss you, Lois, and as you told us every night: Sleep tight, don’t let the bed bugs bite…if they do, squeeze them tight. They won’t come back until tomorrow night! We love you!
