MR. DWIGHT AARON SMITH - Age 68, of Chattanooga, TN passed away Thursday, July 30, 2026. He was born July 19, 1958.

Dwight A. Smith was educated in the City of Chattanooga Public School System, graduating from Riverside High School’s class of 1976 and attended Chattanooga State Community College. He entered the United States Military and retired in 2006. During his military journey, he served as Missile Supply Specialist in Turkey, Supply and Stock Control Accountant in Germany, Heavy Equipment and Demolition Specialist in Puerto Rico, Ammunition and Supply Specialist in El Salvadore, and Senior NCO of Class One Missions in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in the United States Army reserve in the 3397 Garrison and the 844th Combat Engineering Unit, Chattanooga Tennessee. SSG Smith received the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Commendation Medal during his years of duty. He honorably retired from the United States Army, Staff Sergeant, after 23 years of dedicated service to his country.

Dwight was an active community servant. Some of his service includes Civic Engagement chair with the local Chattanooga NAACP, Charter Member and Voter Registration Chair and chaplain with the Eastdale Community Development Corporation, Inc., member of Woodmoore Neighborhhood Association, Advocate for fair housing, and Supervisor of the District 5 Poll site. He is the recipient of the NAACP Viola Mapp Image Award for service and the Prestigious NAACP President’s Ruby Hurley Image Award.

Dwight enjoyed fishing, music, sports, and spending time with family. He is a member of the New Covenant Fellowship Church where he participates in the Men's Ministry and the Kitchen Ministry. He is married to Belinda Sears Smith, the father of four; Adrian, Vasheta, Ebony and Christina Grace and the grandfather of three.

“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the Lord, and depart from evil”.

Homegoing Celebration will be Monday, August 10, 2026 at 12:00 Noon at New Covenant Fellowship Church, 1326 N Moore Rd, Chattanooga, TN 37411. The family will receive extended family and friends on Monday from 11:30 AM - 12:00 Noon at the church. Interment; Chattanooga National Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Willis Funeral Home Inc., Dalton, GA.
