Ms. Mattie Elizabeth Childers peacefully entered eternal rest on July 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, generosity, and quiet grace. Born on September 5, 1947, Mattie was the beloved daughter of the late Lelia Mays Childers and Ned Childers, Jr. She was known for her gentle spirit, quiet strength, unwavering kindness, and steadfast faith.

A graduate with honors from Stephens High School, Class of 1964, Mattie was elected Class President during her freshman year. She later earned her degree from Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, before beginning a distinguished career as a Administrator for the Life of Georgia in Atlanta, Georgia, where she faithfully served for more than thirty years. Mattie had a lifelong love of learning and creativity.

Her life was marked by quiet determination, humility, and a servant's heart. She generously gave of herself, always willing to encourage, help, and support others. Mattie was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Lelia Mays Childers and Ned Childers, Jr. dear friend, Nathanial “Nate”

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted sister, Frances Aker Thompson; her niece, Valerie R. Burrescia (James) and her nephews, Jeffery S. Thompson, and Kevin M. Thompson (Michelle); beloved great-nieces and great-nephews; cherished cousins; treasured friends; and a host of extended family members and loved ones.

Memorial Service will be Saturday, July 18, 2026 at 4:00 PM at Allen Chapel AME Church, 227 S. King St, Calhoun, GA 30701. Interment will be at Historic Colbert Cemetery. Arrangement entrusted to Willis Funeral Home, Inc., Dalton, GA.
