Shirley Rebecca Ann Scott-Mitchell

10/29/1946 - 09/22/2026

Shirley Rebecca Ann Scott-Mitchell, age 79, of Knoxville, Tennessee, departed this life peacefully on Tuesday, September 22, 2026. She was born October 29, 1946, in Knoxville, Tennessee, to the late Warren Scott Sr. and Mary Ellen McAliley Scott. She was the ninth of twelve children.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Minnie Scott, Bernice Scott, Margaret Scott Bonds, Barbara Jean Holloway, Ruby Jean Scott Jones, and Jeanette Virginia "Little Bit" Scott McKinney; and brothers, Warren George Scott Jr., James Knox Scott, James David Scott, Donald Scott, and Charles Scott.

At an early age, Shirley accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and united with Mt. Calvary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served and worshipped for many years. Even after she was no longer able to attend services regularly due to declining health, her faith remained steadfast and unwavering. She was a graduate of Austin High School, Class of 1965, and later attended Knoxville Business College.

Shirley was a devoted wife, loving mother, cherished grandmother, proud great-grandmother, family matriarch, and faithful friend. Sixty years ago, she met the love of her life, Clarence Mitchell, and together they shared 59 years of marriage, building a legacy rooted in faith, love, and family.

A trailblazer in her own right, Shirley became the first African American woman employed by the Krystal Corporation on Magnolia Avenue before transferring to its Broadway location. She later became the first African American woman employed by Lay's Packing Company, where her father and several brothers worked. Her passion for cooking ultimately led her to a rewarding career with Knoxville City Schools, where she faithfully served for many years.

Shirley enjoyed reading, especially romance novels, tending to her plants and flowers, and spending time with friends playing bingo. However, her greatest joy was found in caring for her family. Her home was the gathering place for holidays, celebrations, and dinners. Family and friends alike knew they would always find a warm welcome, a delicious meal, and unconditional love within her home.

As a mother, Shirley instilled Christian values in her children from an early age, ensuring they were raised with a strong foundation of faith. She encouraged their participation in church activities, including summer camps, Vacation Bible School, and children's choirs. She was their greatest supporter, faithfully attending and cheering them on through baseball, basketball, football, track, and every endeavor they pursued.

As a grandmother, she opened her home and heart to her grandchildren from infancy. She taught them the importance of prayer, faith, and Scripture. At bedtime, she could be found on her knees always reminding them "It's time to say our prayers." She enjoyed chaperoning school field trips and attending countless activities involving her children and grandchildren.

Shirley leaves to cherish her precious memories her devoted husband, Clarence E. Mitchell; children, Marvin (Karen) Scott, Anthony Scott, Clarence Scott, and Margaret Scott; 10 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, whose lives were enriched by her love and guidance.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 10, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon at St. John's Lutheran Church, 544 N. Broadway. A Celebration of Life Service will begin at 12:00 noon, with burial to follow at Mt. Olive Cemetery. A dove release will conclude in her honor.

The family welcomes floral tributes in Shirley's memory. Flowers may be sent to Unity Mortuary, 1425 McCalla Avenue, Knoxville, Tennessee 37915. For those who prefer, memorial donations may be made to the UT Foundation in Shirley's memory.

Her legacy of faith, hospitality, perseverance, and unconditional love will continue to inspire generations to come.
