Funeral Services will be 1pm, Thursday, October 1, 2026 at Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church by Reverend Lathan with burial in the church cemetery. The funeral will be livestream on Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church website (facebook). It will begin at 1:00 pm.

Viewing will be 1-5 pm, Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at McMullen Funeral Home.

Obituary

Marie I. Hinson born on January 7, 1924, in Heath Spring, South Carolina, to the late Jeffie and Tempia Ingram. On September 24, 2026, Marie entered into eternal rest.

From an early age, Marie possessed an entrepreneurial spirit. As a young girl, she worked at a dry cleaners on North Market Street in Rock Hill, South Carolina. There, she began developing the work ethic and determination that would eventually lead her to pursue her dream of owning her own business.

In 1945, Marie achieved her dream and opened Marie's Beauty Salon, becoming a Black woman business owner and entrepreneur in her community. She took great pride in styling the hair of women and children and was known for her talent, dedication, grace, and professionalism. Marie also poured into the next generation, training several young women in the community who desired to become hairstylists. She encouraged them to pursue their dreams and just as she had done, open beauty salons of their own.

Marie was deeply devoted to her community and her church, Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully served in numerous capacities. She was honored as the Mother of the Church and served as a Deaconess, Missionary Worker, President of the Usher Board, Trustee, and Secretary of the Sunday School. She was also a member Senior Choir until her illness.

Her commitment to serve to extended beyond the church. Marie was a lifetime member of the NAACP and a member of Eastern Star #223, New Hope Chapter. Above all , Marie loved the Lord and was a faithful servant. Her faith remained a source of strength throughout her life. She enjoyed watching one of her favorite game shows, Let's Make a Deal, singing her favorite church songs, and listening to Scriptures, which was read to her daily.

Marie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Deacon Odell Hinson; six children, Thomasina W. Scott, William P. Witherspoon, Lonnie Clyburn, Jonnie Clyburn, Bertha Peay, and James W. Twitty; six sisters, Mamie Thompson, Beatrice Nelson, Susie M. Cunningham, Odessa Clark, Geneva Reese, and Eula M. Thompson; and six brothers, Jeff Ingram, Leo Ingram, Cleaven Ingram, Freddie Ingram, George Ingram, and Roosevelt Ingram.

Marie leaves to cherish her memory Lillian Jones (Henry), LaMonica Blair of Lancaster, South Carolina, Jasmine Blair of Lanham, Maryland, and Gerald Jones (Kim) of Atlanta, Georgia, who lovingly served as her caregivers: two daughters, Janice Cathcart (Melvin) and Betty M. Anthony both of Lancaster, South Carolina; four sons, Odell R. Hinson, Joseph C. Hinson, James M. Hinson (Reena) all of Lancaster, South Carolina and Benjamin F. Hinson of Lexington, South Carolina; fifty-one grandchildren, fifty-nine great grandchildren, thirty-nine great-great grandchildren; one brother, Elmore Ingram of Buffalo, New York; Larry Cunningham (Penny) her godson, of Knoxville, Tennessee; Linda Bumas her goddaughter of Buffalo, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and friends.

Though she entered eternal rest, the legacy Marie leaves behind will continue through every life she touched, every lesson she taught, and every person she encouraged along the way. Her work on earth is complete, but her legacy lives on.
