Mary Elizabeth Estes was born on October 27, 1941, in Martinsville, Virginia, to Jerry S. Fontaine and Lillie Watkins. Mary passed away on September 19, 2026, in East Meadow, New York, at the age of 84.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Melvin Estes of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, who passed away in March 2021, as well as her brothers, Jesse Fontaine and Philip Fontaine, both of Martinsville, Virginia.
Mary is survived by her son, Anthony Estes of Jamaica, New York; her grandson, Donte Estes of Phoenix, Arizona; her sisters, Cecil Ward of Westbury, New York, and Maude “Jackie” Hudson of Martinsville, Virginia; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and friends who loved her dearly.
Mary’s faith in Christ was an important part of her life. She was a devoted believer who did her best to live according to His word and to treat others with kindness, compassion, and respect. Her faith helped guide the way she lived, loved, worked, and cared for the people around her.
Throughout her life, Mary was known for her generosity, strong work ethic, and willingness to stand up for what she believed was right. She spent approximately 35 years working for Waldbaum’s in the meat department and had also worked as a waitress earlier in life. Mary was never afraid of hard work and took pride in providing for herself and her family.
Mary cared deeply about her community and was always willing to lend a hand when she could. She was also a strong and headstrong woman who knew her own mind. Once Mary made a decision, there usually was not much changing it. That determination, along with her honesty and strength of character, was a defining part of who she was.
Mary had a true love for the outdoors. She enjoyed farming, gardening, growing her own vegetables, going to the beach, exploring new places, and simply spending time outside. She also enjoyed sewing, knitting, and cooking.
Mary worked hard, loved deeply, gave freely, stood firmly for what she believed was right, and lived with faith, strength, and dignity. She will be greatly missed, but the love, lessons, and memories Mary leaves behind will continue to live through her family and all those who were fortunate enough to know her.
May Mary rest peacefully in the presence of the Lord, reunited with the loved ones who went before her.
