Lillie’s Life Story

When peace like a river attendeth my way,

When sorrows like seabillows roll;

Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to say,

It is well, It is well with my soul.

Lillie Feggins-Boone, affectionately known as “LilAnne” and “Aunt Lillie,” daughter of the late Deacon George Washington and Mother Jennie Ann Baskerville Feggins, was born on October 6, 1953, at Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, VA, and departed this life on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at VCU-Community Memorial Healthcenter in South Hill, VA.

Lillie accepted Christ at an early age, was baptized in Boswell Creek, down the road, and became a member of Free Union RZUA Church in Bracey, VA, under the leadership of Reverend George W. Thompson. Lillie’s education began by attending Head Start at the home of Mr. Nathan & Hilda Hudson, where she learned the basics before attending John Groom Elementary School. She and her older sister, Yvonne took piano lessons. Well, Yvonne quit, but Lillie stuck with it, playing only by notes. She had one favorite song she could play without looking at the notes: “King Jesus Will Roll Your Burdens Away.” Then she became the pianist for local churches, and boy, you couldn’t tell her she wasn’t a MAESTRO of music.

After completing elementary school, she decided to attend Park View High School. The school was open to integration by choice, and Lillie wanted to be among the first to attend. She and three other Black students attended Park View High School (PVHS) before Mecklenburg County schools integrated. Lillie joined the PVHS Dragons Marching Band, where she played the trumpet. She also played on the Girls’ Basketball team, wearing #72, and graduated with the PVHS class of 1972. She furthered her education by attending Shaw University in Raleigh, NC. She joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in April 1974, and she also sang in the Shaw U Gospel Choir.

Upon graduating Cum Laude from Shaw University in 1975, Lillie moved to Washington, DC, to work at the University of the District of Columbia. She decided to further her education while working at the college and began pursuing a master’s degree in psychology. In her second year, her father hurt his back, and she decided to change her major to Funeral Service. She graduated in 1982, at the top of her class. On July 29, 1982, her birthday, Lillie decided to move back home to work in the family’s business (Feggins Funeral Home). Her father was overjoyed to have his daughter working with him. She apprenticed under him, and in May 1985 she received her Funeral Service License and became a partner in the firm. Lillie stepped into her father’s shoes and took flight, handling the business with 100% commitment at all times. She took pride in all her work, loved it, and mastered her profession. After her father's passing, she became President and Owner of Feggins Funeral Home, Incorporated.

In 1988, Lillie married Robert Lee Boone. Being the independent woman she was, she decided to keep her maiden name after marriage, Lillie Feggins-Boone.

Lillie was a faithful and dedicated member of Free Union Church, where she served as Trustee and President of the Free Union Chancel Choir. Even as her health began to slow her down, God gave her the strength to press on to church.

Lillie was involved in many civic organizations: Past President and member of the Southside Funeral Directors Association; Past President and member of the Virginia Morticians Association, Inc.; member of the National Funeral Director’s and Morticians Association, Inc. (NFD&MA); member of the NFD&MA choir; member of the Southside Planning District; Past Worthy Matron of Carnation Chapter #171, Order of the Eastern Star of VA, Prince Hall Affiliation, where she served as Marshall until her demise. She was also President of the Select Few Social Club and a member of the A.P. Walker Mass Choir. She has been a member of the South Hill Town Council since 2007, where she has served as Chairperson of the Personnel and Cemetery Committees and as a member of the Street Committee. In December 2015, she was chosen as the first black Grand Marshal for South Hill’s Christmas parade. She always stated, “I made history y’all…what an accomplishment!”

Lillie’s favorite places to visit were Dollar Tree, The Donut Shop, Roses, Quick Stop #2, and Walmart (which she called Wally World). Her hobbies included FUSSING AT ALL OF US! She cooked all kinds of foods, cleaned, and cooked chitterlings for Christmas, as well as baked cakes, cobblers, and, especially, her mom’s recipe for sweet potato pies. Lillie would cook breakfast and dinner at Momma’s every Sunday, then send a family group-chat text saying, “Breakfast at Mom’s,” which she loved to send. She also adored providing snacks for her nieces and nephews, singing loudly to songs on her cell phone while sitting on the funeral home porch, and visiting her girls on Halifax Street on Fridays. She looked forward to attending her four mortician meetings per year. When she attended the National meetings and saw her NFD&MA family in the lobby, she would say, “The Virginia Girls are here.” Everyone knew her favorite color was red and her favorite songs to sing were “It Is Well With My Soul,” “One Day At A Time,” and “Blessed Assurance.”
