Gracie Whitney

Gracie Whitney was born on April 18, 1932, the third of five children of Henry and Sarah Spencer of Fairfield, North Carolina. She received her early education at Fairfield Grammar School. On June 26, 1953, she married the late Edward Raphael Whitney, a union that produced two daughters.

In 1963 Gracie, following her siblings relocated to New York City where she worked at Eagle Electric
on the assembly line at Manhattan State Psychiatric Hospital and finally as a custodian in the New York City Courts System.

She was a longtime member of Shiloh Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, in New York, NY, until she moved to Hephzibah, GA, and became a member of Richmond Hill Baptist Church. She attended faithfully until age slowed her down. Gracie spent a fair amount of time doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles, as she enjoyed both very much. She also enjoyed watching professional wrestling for many years and was known to travel to Madison Square Garden to see live matches. She baked many cakes and cooked many meals for friends and family. Her sweet tooth was legendary.

She was preceded in death by her eldest sister Irene Campbell and her brothers Ageville and Elbert Spencer.

On August 19, 2026, in the comfort of her home, under the watchful eyes of her two daughters Nina and Annette, she took her last breath and went to be with the Lord.
She leaves to mourn her two daughters, Nina Dudley and Sarah Annette Whitney of Hephzibah, GA; her youngest brother, Columbus Spencer of Augusta, GA; her beloved grandchildren Melisa and Tanisha Dudley and Jason Pruitt Sr. (Kim) of New York. Her great-grandchildren William J. Edmonds Jr, Sebastian H. Edmonds of New Jersey; Autumn Irene Pruitt; and twins Jason Pruitt Jr and Iris Annette Pruitt of New York Nieces: Dorene McKnight of Maryland and Sheree Spencer-Page , Nephews Sean Spencer (Tina) and Derek Spencer of North Carolina
Great Nieces: Natosha McKnight, Trinity, and Zyon Spencer; Great Nephew Sean Spencer II; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.

The family will receive friends one hour before the service from 10:00 am to 11:45 am at the funeral home.

Homegoing service will be 12:00 noon, Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Kinsey & Walton Chapel.
