Mrs. Helen Virginia Eagle Hill

Mrs. Helen Virginia Eagle Hill, born on March 6, 1941, was the second child of the late, Daisy Taylor Eagle and the late, Napoleon Eagle. She grew up in Augusta, Georgia, where she completed grades 1–8 at Charles T. Walker Elementary School and graduated from Lucy C. Laney High School. Mrs. Hill was a dedicated cheerleader for the Lucy Laney Wildcats throughout high school and a proud member of the graduating Class of 1959.

She had a strong faith in God from childhood. Mrs. Hill professed her faith in Christ and was baptized at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Augusta at an early age. After marrying Ransom Hill Jr., her Albany State University sweetheart, she joined Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Miami, Florida. At Sweet Home, she served on the Youth Ministry Team and became the first chairperson of the Sweet Home Baccalaureate Service. She also served as a chaperone for the Youth Choir.

Mrs. Hill was passionate about helping young people focus on praise and worship rather than on what they were wearing or how they looked. To encourage this focus, she assisted with purchasing robes for the entire Youth Choir. Her dedication to the youth of her church left an enduring legacy. Sweet Home dedicated a prayer garden in honor of Mrs. Hill and her husband, Deacon Ransom Hill Jr., on Sunday, November 16, 2025.

Mrs. Hill understood from an early age that a formal education was empowering and could open doors to extraordinary opportunities. She attended Albany State University in Albany, Georgia, where she majored in nursing and graduated in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. While attending Albany State University, she married her college sweetheart, Ransom Hill, Jr., and they moved to Miami, Florida, where she began working at Mount Cedars Hospital. Mrs. Hill worked as a nurse for several years until she felt called to spend more time with her husband, children (Rodney, Randal, and Tonya), and extended family, particularly during the summer and holidays. Her passion for teaching and learning ultimately led her to a fulfilling career in education. She later earned a Master of Education with a concentration in Early Childhood Education from Nova Southeastern University. For most of her career, she served as a teacher at Palmetto Elementary School, where she conducted after-school tutoring sessions. She also chaired the Neighbors Involved in Kids Education Program at Palmetto Elementary.

Most notably, Mrs. Hill incorporated experiential learning into her teaching long before “experiential” became a buzzword in education. Her students did not simply read about butterflies—they experienced the life cycle of butterflies firsthand. She regularly kept butterfly kits with live caterpillars in her classrooms, allowing her students to observe their transformation from caterpillar to butterfly. Also, if you

visited her home, she proudly took you on a tour of her beautiful butterfly garden, which reflected her lifelong love of learning and her fascination with science.

Mrs. Hill was a Lifetime member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, having been initiated into the Pi Delta Omega Chapter in 1987. Throughout her years with the chapter, she served as Second Vice President, Ivy Leaf Reporter, Historian, and Chair of the Scholarship Committee, She also served on the Black Family and Little Miss Fashionetta Committees. Her sorority sisters knew her to be trustworthy, dependable, and hardworking.

Her commitment to service extended beyond the local community. When the Chapter sponsored a service project in Lusaka, Africa, Mrs. Hill traveled there so she could personally witness the impact of the project and see how the women in the community benefited from the Chapter’s donation of sewing machines. She deeply valued traveling and believed in experiencing the world and immersing herself in other cultures.

Mrs. Hill was a woman of honesty, faith, and integrity. Her family and friends knew that they should not ask her a question unless they were prepared to hear her honest answer. She lived by—and left behind—many words of wisdom, including:

· God is everywhere.

· Family and friends are everything.

· Anybody can be “in love.” You should accept nothing less than to love and be loved.

· Be careful about the precedents you set.

· Don’t ask questions about a person’s situation unless you are going to be a part of the solution. Otherwise, you are just being nosy.

· Travel and see the world.

Mrs. Hill was caring, loving, extraordinary, and truly remarkable. Her “Cloud of Witnesses” includes a son, Rodney Hill; parents; sisters; brothers; uncles; aunts; cousins; a nephew; and many dear friends.

She leaves behind to celebrate her remarkable life and cherish her memory: a God-given and devoted husband, Ransom Hill Jr.; a son, Randal (Michelle) Hill; a daughter, Tonya Hill Lindsey; seven grandchildren, Marcus Hill, Alayah Hill, Gabrielle Hawkins, Na’Arah Hill, Briahna Hill, Ciarah Hill, and Michael Lindsey; a sister, Rosbin (Clarence) Eagle Ivery; three sisters-in-love, Eleanor Bibb Eagle, Elinor Hill, and Geraldine (George) Hill Koonce; one brother-in-love, Robert (Sharon) Taft Hill; a best friend since college, Margie Fayson; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, friends, and students.

Graveside service will be conducted Thursday, September 10, 2026, at 12:30PM at Mount Olive Memorial Gardens, 3666 Deans Bridge Road, Hephzibah, Georgia 30815.
