Massieren Spires, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, was called home by God on October 28, 2026, at the age of 82.
Born on May 25, 1944, in Marianna, Florida, Massieren was the third child of Cary Spires, Sr., and Inez Swails Spires.
Massieren grew up in Marianna and was educated at Jackson County Training School. In her twenties, she briefly lived in New Jersey with her two oldest children, James and Vanessa. Missing the familiar pace of small-town life, she returned home to Marianna, where she continued building a life rooted in faith, family, friendship, and hard work.
A member of Bethel Star Missionary Baptist Church, Massieren valued her relationship with God and the fellowship of her church community. She worked in Environmental Services at Jackson Hospital, where she remained until her retirement.
Massieren had a deep passion for politics and social justice. She participated in marches during the civil rights movement of the 1960s and instilled in her children and grandchildren the importance of voting, advocacy, and standing up for what is right. Her commitment to speaking up was especially evident in her devotion to her children. A true “Momma Bear,” she remained their fierce protector and greatest advocate throughout their lives.
She treasured both of her daughters-in-law, Brenda and Patricia. The family is especially grateful to Brenda for the kindness, care, and companionship she offered Massieren during her final years.
Among the acts of love she held closest to her heart was caring for her father, Cary. She took great pride in supporting him throughout his life and eventually welcomed him into her own home to provide his care.
An exceptional cook and enthusiastic baker, Massieren expressed her love through the meals she prepared and the gatherings she helped make special. Her holiday meals and Sunday dinners created cherished memories, and some of her recipes are preserved in the family cookbook.
She enjoyed gardening, mowing her own lawn, listening to live music, traveling, dining out, shopping, and visiting with family and friends. She also loved and cherished her Pekingese, Doll, whom she treasured as a member of the family.
An active participant in family reunions, Massieren possessed a vivid memory and shared generations of family history, helping loved ones remain connected to their roots.
Waiting to welcome her with a heavenly embrace are her parents, Cary and Inez Spires; her brothers, Myles Spires, Sr., Henry Lee Spires, Rayfield Spires, Macon Spires, and Cary Spires, Jr.; and her sisters, Maggie Mae Spires, Inez “Sheila” Spires, Irene Spires Smith, and Eldean Spires Nichols.
Massieren leaves to cherish her precious memory four loving children: Rayfield Spires of Los Angeles, California; Terry Spires and his wife, Brenda, of Lehigh Acres, Florida; Vanessa Drayton of Tampa, Florida; and James Drayton, affectionately known as “Walter,” and his wife, Patricia, of Marianna, Florida.
She also leaves two brothers, Lemon Spires of Marianna, Florida, and Joe Spires and his wife, Rosemary, of Jacksonville, Florida; one sister, Shelvy Spires of Ankeny, Iowa; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and dear friends.
Her loved ones will deeply miss her beautiful smile, warm hugs, infectious laugh, treasured phone calls, perseverance, prayers, and guidance. Her extraordinary ability to nurture, protect, and mentor others leaves a legacy that will live on in the many lives she touched.
Her love will remain in every shared family story, every cherished recipe, and every life strengthened by her care.
A private service has been scheduled for close family and friends. Those wishing can send flowers and condolences to Peoples Funeral Home in care of the family.
