Josephine Sims Mitchell was born on June 20, 1925, in Stephens County, Maxeys, Georgia, to Joseph and Nancy Sims (Watson). She was one of thirteen siblings—six sisters and seven brothers.
She attended Moton Chapel Elementary School, completing her education there through the eighth grade. At the age of 18, she met her future husband, Nathaniel Mitchell, at Oconee Baptist Church. After just a few encounters, Nathaniel asked, “Do you want to get married?” to which she responded, “Yes.” They were married on December 26, 1943, at her parents’ home and later moved to Atlanta, Georgia.
Their union was blessed with twelve children—six daughters and six sons. Additionally, they raised two of their grandchildren, nurturing a total of fourteen children, all of whom graduated from the Atlanta Public School System. Josephine and Nathaniel instilled in their children the values of education, self-reliance, strong character, and unwavering faith in God as guiding principles for success in life.
Following Nathaniel’s passing in July 1968, Josephine took the initiative to further her education. She attended evening classes at Archer High School, where she earned her certification as a nursing assistant. She later worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Sadie G. Mays Nursing Home, dedicating herself to the care of others.
Josephine became a devoted member of Providence Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Otis Moss, Jr. She served diligently on Usher Board #1, contributed to preparing and serving meals for special events, and faithfully maintained the communion table linens for two decades. She continues to serve on the Mothers Board, demonstrating a lifelong commitment to her faith and community.
Her legacy extends beyond her children, as she is the proud grandmother of over 30 grandchildren and the great-grandmother of more than 33 great-grandchildren, all of whom are a testament to the values and love she has shared throughout her life.
