Obituary For Lula Mae Gober Skelton

Celebration of Life Services for Mrs. Lula Mae Gober Skelton will be held Friday, June 11, 2021, 1:00PM in Elizabeth's Chapel of Alfonso Dawson Mortuary. Interment, Westview Cemetery,1680 Westview Drive SW, Atlanta, GA 30310.

Public viewing will be Thursday, June, 10, 2021, 11:00AM - 7:00PM at Alfonso Dawson Mortuary. Family hour will be held between 5:00PM - 7:00PM.

Lula was born in Toccoa, Georgia on February 6, 1935 to William and Ali Mae Gober, where she grew up with 12 siblings. It was Lula’s mother, Ali Mae, that grounded Lula with values around God and family which shaped her beliefs and guided her steps for all her life. Her focus, from that miraculous day in February of 1935 until that glorious day on June 4, 2021, was indeed on God and family through worship, love, service, and adoration. Lula was a proud member of Trinity C.M.E. Church in Toccoa where she volunteered her services to numerous church groups, always willing to lend a hand whenever and wherever needed.

Lula later moved to Atlanta, GA where she made Cascade United Methodist Church her home for continued worship and service to the Lord.

She made many sacrifices out of love and devotion for her family. Early evidence of Lula’s love and devotion can be found in her years as a teenager when she removed herself from high school, foregoing her education, to go work and help support her family. Even though her schooling was cut short, she pushed the importance of education and was always first in line to celebrate the academic accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Lula was a role model for strong work ethic. She worked tirelessly to provide for her family and was never without employment until her retirement. For many years, she worked for the State of Georgia as a nurse’s aid in a Toccoa group home. Lula was very proud of the work she did at the group home as it aligned perfectly with her passion of helping and caring for others. She often commented that the job was “tailored made” for her because she loved being able to serve and uplift others. Lula did not just talk about helping others; she also, walked the walk. When it became difficult for members of her family to care for themselves, Lula, without second thought, would often step in and insist that those family members move into her house so that she could provide personal care. If there were members of her community that needed love and belonging, Lula, again, would not hesitate to invite them into her home where they were fully accepted as a member of her family with all the rights and privileges, thereof. She practiced what she preached.

Lula was preceded in death by her siblings, Irvin Gober, Sallie Gober, Hoyt Gober, Warren Gober, Mary Gober, Edward Gober, William Gober, Grace Gober, Eugene Gober, Jessie Harrison, Lilly Scott, Winnie Jarrett, and by her daughter Vanessa Russell.

Lula is survived by her son Lance (Kathy) Skelton, by her grand kids Ethridge Russell, Mikal Russell, Michelle (Avery) Starr, Mallory Skelton, Harrison Skelton, Crystal Leamons, Christopher (Joi) Leamons, and a host of great grand kids, nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.
