Study to show thyself approved unto God; a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 KJV
Mr. E. K. Chaney began his pursuit of excellence in a local church school and then to went high school at Gillespie-Selden Institute, Cordele, GA. After graduating from high school, he attended Fort Valley (College) University, Fort Valley, GA where he received his bachelor’s degree. He served in the US Army Korean Conflict, with tours in Korea and Japan. Not to be deterred by the segregated south, he traveled north to attend Indiana University of Bloomington, IN where he earned a master’s degree. Inspired by a legacy of educators beginning with his maternal grandmother, Elnora Lewis Whitehead, and maternal aunt, Nuna Bell Mayo … he began teaching at Forest Chapel Church School in the 1950’s and then at Jack Buckholt Elementary School. He later became Assistant Principal at Vienna Elementary and successfully retired as Principal in the Dooly County School system at Unadilla Elementary (formerly Jack Buckholt Elementary). Mr. Chaney was recognized as an exemplary compassionate leader by those who worked with him including teachers and support staff alike. His lifelong passion was an educator always happy to talk with former students.
As a dedicated alumni, he was a consistent top-level contributor to The Fort Valley State University paving the way for many students who otherwise would not have been able to further their education. His legacy lives on in the success of many family members who have achieved high levels of success in education and other industries. He was always encouraging others to be their best.
Mr. E. K. Chaney was born Earl K. Chaney to the Late Oscar and Lou Emma Whitehead Chaney. He grew up in a farming family of eight children. Four siblings preceded him in death, Berneice (Tim) Brown, H. J. (Lorine) Chaney, Verlene (Herbert) Henderson, and Edward Chaney. And three siblings remain leading the celebration of a well-lived life, two brothers and one sister: Oscar Jr. (Ara Belle); Unadilla, GA; Philip, Gainesville, FL and Undine (Sammy) Walker Grayson, GA along with an ever-growing group of nieces and nephews, now to the third generation, all endeared to Uncle Sonny.
Mr. Chaney and my dad were lifelong friends. He would always bring vegetables and pecans from his farm, when he came to visit. My dad held him in high esteem. Old soldiers never die, they just keep marching on. 🙏🏽
To the Chaney family, our hearts go out to all of you. Mr Chaney was a great friend, neighbor, and was loved by so many. My mother worked for Mr Chaney at the elementary school for a few years and us Graham girls Loved this man. My husband and I were neighbors to Mr E.K just across the creek, and use to see him out walking. He'd always wave and keep walking. If we were outside in the yard, he'd stop and chat a spell. Years passed, he went to the assisted living in which we visited him and chatted, laughed. and reminisced. He will be missed by many and the memories will last forever. God bless this family! A great man in his own right. A lot like my father in that discipline was required to be successful whether it was internally driven or externally applied.
