Dillon Ray Mason, age 74, of Durham passed May 19, 2025 at Camellia Gardens Assisted Living.
Dillon Ray Mason—affectionately known as “Ray”—entered this world on Wednesday, August 16, 1950, in Williamston, North Carolina, the cherished son of Ralph Mason Sr. and Nossie Lee James Mason.
A proud graduate of E. J. Hayes High School in the Martin County. Ray discovered his voice through the shining bell of his trumpet. His musical gift earned him a full scholarship to Elizabeth City State University—but when duty called, he answered. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving faithfully as a Telecommunicator.
Upon returning home from his military duty he relocated to New Haven, CT and became an employee of the local telephone company. Years later he returned to Williamston, NC. On February 20, 2004, he came under the compassionate care of Camellia Gardens Assisted Living, where staff and fellow residents considered him as family.
Early on Monday morning, May 19, 2025, Ray’s journey on earth came to a peaceful close. Preceded him in death are his parents, Ralph Sr. and Nossie Lee, his siblings Jean Washington (Leon), Jimmy Mason, Ralph Mason Jr., and Sherman Mason. He leaves behind son Frederick Huff (Torso) 3 grandchildren, Dominic, Donesha and Frederick, devoted sister Vanessa Williams (and the memory of Bobby), brothers John Alvin Mason (Carolyn), Kelvin Mason (Patricia), Melvin Mason (Jackie), and a host of nieces and nephews who will carry his kindness in their hearts.
Ray’s gentle trumpet may have fallen silent, but its melody lingers in every life he touched.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2025, 2:00 pm at American Cremation & Funeral Service.
