Obituary For Donald "Don" Davis Mickey

Donald Davis “Don” Mickey of Durham, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2026, at the age of 86. He leaves behind a legacy of scholarship, service, intellectual curiosity, and a deep appreciation for the natural world.

Born on February 26, 1940, Don devoted his life to education, communication, and lifelong learning. A graduate of Louisiana State University, he pursued an academic and professional career. He taught and did research at both Duke University and the University of North Carolina, inspiring students through his commitment to knowledge and academics. He later served as a writer and editor for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, where his skill with language and scientific research were highly valued.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, Tecetl Mickey.

He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Mickey; his son, Mark Mickey, and daughter-in-law, Sarah Bennett; his granddaughter, Kendall; and his step-grandson, Caden. He also leaves behind cherished friends, colleagues and extended family members who will remember him for his, wisdom, and quiet generosity and subtle sense of humor.

Outside of his professional accomplishments, Don found great happiness in gardening, reading, and listening to classical music. An avid enthusiast of nature, he had a special affection for the mountains of Western North Carolina, where he spent many rewarding days backpacking trails and enjoying the beauty of nature. Those experiences demonstrate his lifelong belief in the connection to and stewardship of the natural world.

Don will be remembered for his sharp intellect, dry humor, humble spirit, and academic curiosity. He approached life with humility and grace, finding joy in learning, beauty in nature, and meaning in life.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to The Nature Conservancy, North Carolina Chapter, an organization that reflects Don's lifelong love of conservation and the outdoors. Donations may be sent to The Nature Conservancy, 320 Blackwell Street, Suite 200, Durham, NC 27701, or made online through their website.

Don's life was rich in purpose, learning, and love. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, in the studies he pursued, and in the mountains and gardens he loved so dearly.

"The mountains called to him throughout his life, and in their enduring beauty his spirit will forever be remembered."
