Obituary For James John Moore

James John Moore a resident of Chapel Hill, NC passed on February 21st, 2021 at his home. He was 89 years old. James or Jim as he was most often called was a devoted husband to Eleanor Joyce Moore for nearly 60 years and loving father to their daughters Jennifer and Susanna. Jim had many nieces and a few nephews that considered him to be like a father in many ways as he was always in their corner and available for advice and consultation.

Jim was born September 22nd, 1931 in New York City, NY to Mary McHugh and James Moore who had immigrated from Ireland. He joined and served in the US Army 82nd Airborne and was always grateful for his experiences and time in service to the USA. Jim and Eleanor Joyce married November 22nd, 1961 in New York. They met working together in an advertising agency. Jim was a skilled writer and much of his career was spent in the advertising field as a copywriter. He also worked as a union sandhog building the tunnels surrounding New York and New Jersey. James and Eleanor moved to Westchester New York and raised their two daughters in Yorktown cheering them on at school events, camps and on the soccer field.

Jim had a passion for justice and looked out for the underdog in most situations. He was an ardent believer in civil rights, women’s rights, and human rights. He was a believer in measure twice cut once. He liked to work with his hands on projects and enjoyed cooking for himself and his family. Butter was a necessary ingredient in most recipes. He was a fantastic storyteller but also a listener and a consoler to his extended family and close friends. He enjoyed his Irish heritage and he and Eleanor made a few trips to the places where his family emigrated from. He loved to be by the ocean and at a time owned a sailboat. He was known for his intellect and recall of all he read and learned. He also loved the movies and Turner Classics was a favorite channel.

James is survived by his wife Eleanor, his two children and their spouses Jennifer and Shane Scott and Susanna and Josh Niederberger as well as beloved nieces, nephews, and his 4 granddaughters whom he adored. His wife, daughters, extended family and close friends will miss him dearly always knowing they could count on him through thick or thin.
