Obituary For Michael Edward "Mike" Duke

Michael Edward "Mike" Duke, 73, passed away peacefully at home on January 27, 2026, in Durham, North Carolina, the city where he was born and spent much of his life.

Born on October 8, 1952, in Durham, Mike embodied the values of hard work, integrity, and quiet perseverance. He began his education at Durham Tech and later earned his license in heating and air conditioning from Alamance Tech—all while working full-time. His commitment to self-reliance and personal growth remained a constant throughout his life.

In 1992, Mike founded Duke Heating & Air Conditioning. Through this venture, he installed gas logs and gas equipment for customers across the region. Known for his honesty and loyalty, he built a reputation as a dependable professional who took pride in doing things the right way.

Before beginning his business career, Mike served honorably in the United States Army as an SP4/E4 with the 185th Maintenance Battalion during the Vietnam War. His service earned him several commendations: the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device. His time in uniform reflected the same values that guided him throughout his life—duty, discipline, and strength.

Mike found joy in life’s simple pleasures: time with family and friends, loyal dogs by his side, and a job well done. He believed deeply in personal responsibility and took pride in what he built through hard work.

He is survived by his 2 brothers; Thomas Wayne Duke and Linwood (Lenny) Duke, his beloved wife of 43 years, Bonnie Duke; daughters; Melanie Duke of Texas and Jessica Duke Knapp of Wilmington, North Carolina; stepsons; Ralph Bell of Charleston, South Carolina and Shane Wilson, Durham, North Carolina, four grandsons; three granddaughters; and one great-granddaughter.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on February 28, 2026, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM at American Legion, 406 E. Trinity Ave., Durham, NC. Open invitation—come when you can; casual attire encouraged.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him.
