Nancy Elizabeth Granecki, born November 15th 1953 (age 66) in Durham, North Carolina, to her parents Jeanette and the late John Sumner, passed away peacefully on July 23rd 2020 surrounded by close loving friends and family. She is survived by her two sons Walt and Robert Granecki, her granddaughter Avery Autumn, her sisters Jill Breazeale and Carol Bridges, and her unforgettable cat Marlon.
Nancy grew up in Little Washington, NC and attended Eastern Carolina University from 1972-1976 for Nursing. She then moved to the Triangle and worked at the Durham VA Medical Center as a float nurse, clinical preceptor coordinator, Head Nurse in SPCU, relief coordinator, acting ACN and other roles from 1976-1994. She was described in a performance review as: “In summary, Ms. Granecki is a capable and hardworking professional who has made numerous contributions at this VAMC and to the profession of nursing”. After participating in a 10 year Nurses Health Study she reviewed a certification on behalf of the Harvard School of Public Health and the Channing Laboratory at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
From 1994-1999 while working at a Home Health Agency as an Education Coordinator and Interim Assistant Director of Clinical Services, with two small children, she completed her Masters in Nursing – Staff Development from UNC Greensboro. She then went back to the Durham VA from 1999-2008 as a Nurse/Nurse Educator and won the Honor-A-Nurse campaign from the North Carolina Foundation for Nursing in 2000, the Great 100 Nurse Award for North Carolina in 2000, the North Carolina Nurses Association award for Service Nurse Educator of the Year in 2001, and an award for Special Contributions from the VA in 2002.
In 2008 she began working as a Special Assistant at the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention within the Veterans Health Administration where she worked until her health began to decline in March of 2020. Here Nancy received a Certificate of Appreciation for her administrative and clinical expertise on the MOVE! Campaign. In total she received a service award in April of 2020 for 40 years of service to the VA. While Nancy achieved all these accomplishments her humble and caring nature out shined them all.
She was an active member of Fletcher’s Chapel Methodist Church in Durham, NC where a private funeral service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America LCFA or Mission 22 to honor her fight against lung cancer and her dedication to our veterans.
Send flowers to the service of Nancy Granecki
Nancy, Susi, and Irene were my lifelines when I first started at the Durham VA in 1998. Nancy was overseeing Nursing Orientation at that time, and was the person I had the most contact with. One of my early memories at the VA is of Nanc taking the time to help me learn to use Word. Can you imagine!?!? I had minimal computer experience and she sat at the keyboard to help me create a document. Suddenly the computer shutdown. I was in a complete panic that we had lost all the work she had done! Then she reminded me that there was an autosave feature and, sure enough, it was all there when we brought it back up. What a dear to take the time out of her very busy schedule to help me with a form! But that was how she was...always willing to help, always a hardworker, always unpretentious and completely sincere. She was a nurse's nurse. But the thing I will remember the most about Nancy is how dedicated she was to her boys. She absolutely adored them and they were her prime focus at all times. I have not known a more dedicated mother. At Christmas time, Nancy, Rosemary, Susi and I would meet for dinner and catch up. We all took turns talking about this or that, but all that Nancy talked about were her boys. They were her life, and she lived a good life.... a life that her boys can admire..... a life that was unfairly cut short. I am so sad that she could not have enjoyed many, many years of retirement and joyful times with her family. But I am grateful that I shared a small part of the life she had. With love in my heart, Adrienne
My thoughts and prayers with Carol and family during this time. I remember meeting Nancy in my Nursing Orientation at DVAMC years ago. She was my go to person from day 1. Many fond memories of sweet Nancy. May she rest in peace. Shawn
Praying for Carol and the family during this difficult journey.
I have many memories of Nancy while working with her hand in hand with NEO when she was a nurse educator at DAVMC. She was a delightful and spirited person. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Mildred Manning-Joy.
Rest In Peace Nancy! Enjoy the benefits of eternal life and happiness.

Rest in Peace Nancy! Ida Wylie
Nancy was a delightful person and I'm honored to have known her. She was kind, easy going, and fun. For those that knew her, it's not at all surprising that her successful career was devoted to caring for others. She was an amazing Mom as evidenced by the heartfelt tributes provided by Robert and Walt at her funeral. Nancy was truly awesome! Roger Speight
I have so many memories of Nancy. I was her first nurse manager at the Durham VA Medical Center. She was a hard worker & provided excellent care to our vets. It was a joy & fun to work with Nancy in other settings within the DVAMC. A person could not ask for a more loyal friend than Nancy. I have recently spent time remembering our times together at work & play. I have laughed & cried over these memories. Nancy was well loved by many. I count myself very fortunant to have known & loved her. Mary Kay WootenHPEN

Nancy Granecki was the BEST! She had a passion for life that shined like a beacon in her nursing professional career and family life. She left us with wonderful memories of the friendship she shared with each of us. The legacy she leaves with us will be cherished by all who came to know her. Gwen Waddell-Schultz
We were so saddened to hear the news of Nancy's passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Steve, Sara, Catherine and William Samosky.
I will miss you Nancy... you have been a great friend and colleague for many many years. I loved our many party planning events (always on the social committees at work), our Raleigh play seasons (you would always give me directions how to get there), lunches with Rosemary and sometimes Connie and Heidi, and I loved how you would know EVERYTHING about certain things through your compassionate research (dental plans... whichever plan you selected, I would say to myself - it must be the best and I would follow!) LOL.
You were a GREAT nurse and role model to new nurses through your teaching and your actions. You were a GREAT mother and grandmother and a GREAT friend to so many of us...
I love you Nancy and may you enjoy all the benefits of eternal life! Susi Harp
My favorite memories of Nancy are the many girls trips we shared, roaming across North Carolina. The Paint Night was a blast as well. I also enjoyed the Friday Night dinner and movie parties that she hosted. I will dearly miss Nancy, my friend and fellow grandmother to Avery. I will never let Avery forget her loving Ya Ya. Faithfully and sincerely, Beth W. Smith
Our staff will continue to keep your family in our prayers. We thank you for allowing us to serve your family.
