Catherine Pearson was one of six siblings who were the children of Jimmie Moses and Sara Toney. She was born in Bishopville, South Carolina on May 17th, 1929. She was the last living sibling. Her brothers and her only sister, Ernest Moses, George Moses, Nathaniel Moses, Jimmie Moses Jr. and Janie White have all preceded her passing. Her son, William Moses was recently deceased in the past year. While this history may seem sad to all of us left in this life, those family members are free and now remain in Jehovah’s memory.
With all that has happened in Catherine’s family she retained (as you may have witnessed) a quiet grace, and strength. She enjoyed being around her friends and family and she was known to be a great cook. I can remember her and my uncle preparing cakes and pies for various church occasions in a kitchen that could barely fit one person, but they managed. I can remember her fried chicken, whiting and peach cobbler along with collard greens and yams.
She and her siblings grew up in a small town that was mostly farmland and the story goes that they called her “sun”. I never understood why that was a nickname given to her until my mother explained, “your grandad would have us go into the fields to pick cotton, peanuts, corn and whatever else was growing. Cat as we called her, always seemed to come down with some type of ailment when it was time to go in the field, especially if the sun was out.”(hence the nickname). She would hang out in the kitchen and help my grandmother with the cooking rather than be in “that field” as she called it.
As a small child maybe four or five, my daughter, said “Aunt Cat is humble” I was surprised by her comment at such a young age, but her description fit right along with Cat’s other qualities. She leaves behind, a grandson, Elijah Moses, Linda Chesterfield, nephew Cedric White, Terri Eady-White, Daphanne Mason, Ann Moses, Georgia Mae Jenkins, Alfine Clemmons, Rosalee Bradley, Sammie White, Carl Fuller, Rosalyn Fuller, Lisa Helzner, Lia White, Jordan White, Allen Kates, Carlton Kates and many family members and friends.
