On September 9, 1989, the world was blessed with the arrival of a beautiful baby boy, Charles Daquan Rome, born at Harlem Hospital. He entered the world at 6:01 a.m., weighing 6 pounds, 1 ounce, to loving parents Charles Rome, who preceded him in death, and Raquel Wilson. A true Harlem native, Charles lived, learned, and loved deeply within the community that shaped him.
From the very beginning, Charles was gifted. To say he was talented would be a huge understatement. He began his educational journey in Head Start at Mennonite School at the tender age of five, already showing signs of his creativity, intelligence, and determination. As he continued through middle school and high school, Charles consistently excelled academically and earned a reputation for being respectful, bright, and naturally gifted.
Charles deeply loved his siblings and family, and his bond with them was a constant source of joy and strength throughout his life. He was known for his loyalty, protectiveness, and the genuine love he showed to those closest to him. Among his greatest treasures was witnessing the birth of his son, Nasir Rome, a moment that filled his heart with pride and purpose. To know him was to love him, as his presence left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of being part of his life.
Charles was known to his friends as “Rocky PaPo,” a name that reflected both his strength and warmth. He attended school in Harlem, played in Harlem, and carried Harlem in his heart. Speaking of heart, Charles had one of the biggest hearts in the room, especially when it came to those he loved. His compassion, loyalty, and generosity left lasting impressions on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Among his many talents, Charles was an artist whose drawings were beautifully rendered and full of expression. He later developed another powerful gift, dancing. Charles was a phenomenal dancer, participating in dance organizations such as Lite Feet and many other dance groups, specializing in the old-school Harlem Shake. At times, it seemed as though he defied gravity with his movement, captivating audiences with his rhythm, creativity, and energy.
Charles leaves to cherish his memory his parents: his mother, Raquel S. Cooper; his father, Charles Rome, who preceded him in death; and his stepfather, Abdul M. Cooper. He is also survived by his lovingly adopted mother, Debbie Patterson; his stepmother, Monica Rome; his grandmother, Beverly Wilson; and his godfather, Patrick Stubb. He leaves behind his beloved son, Nasir Jahmair Casmir Rome, and Nasir’s mother, Robin Lowman; his siblings, Caprice Wilson (Robert), Christopher Rome, Chantia Rome, Precious Bailey, and Tony Bailey; his lovingly adopted family, Anthony Taft, Shaquanna Taft, Chris Patterson, Antione Verona, Derek Lily, Harvey Dent, and Michael Fox; his aunts, Fannie Mae Liburd, Katherine Rome, Tasha Allen Maximo, and Gissella Maximo; his uncles, Leon Rome, Augustus Liburd, and Dartan Smith; his nieces, Shiyell Huntley, Ahzaria Huntley, Donjon Wilson, Jamaiha Wilson, Aubrey Rome, Autumn Rome, and Shaniya Marville; his nephew, Chancellor Arrington; his great-nephews, Kaycen Wilson and Cymari King; his cousins, Kiesha Smith, Keith Mitchell, Shawndaneen Allen, Chaniya, Keena Liburd, Tashai Huntley, Joseph Huntley, Raymond Rome and Tasha Rome; along with a host of extended family members and dear friends.
In every role he held, son, brother, nephew, uncle, cousin, PaPo and friend, Charles stepped up with love and responsibility. Though human and imperfect, he lived fully and authentically. If you believe in God, as Charles did, you understand that we all rely on human ability and that errors will be made. God is fully aware of those errors and forgives abundantly. Charles lived humanly, and through grace, he is now spiritually released.
