Getrude Green (née Hicks) was born to Luther and Mary Hicks on February 4, 1926, the second youngest of five children in Ashby, Alabama. Due to the untimely passing of her mother, Getrude was sent to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she was raised by her aunt Gertrude Rutledge.
A bright and determined young woman, Getrude graduated high school and soon set off for Harlem, New York, to live with her cherished aunt Carrie Hill—affectionately known as “Mimi.” It was during that time she met her soulmate, Charles Green. Their love blossomed, and they were joyfully united in marriage on January 28, 2025. Together, they built a beautiful life in the Bronx and raised their son Keith. Getrude enjoyed a fulfilling career in the billing department of RCA Global Communications, but her true passion was her role as the “Executive Director of Planning for the Green Household,” a title she wore with pride and humor. She found joy in camping adventures and took great pleasure in out-fishing her husband.
Gertrude was a radiant light in her community and a devoted servant of the Lord. Her faith was unwavering, and she often quoted her favorite scripture: “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” — Proverbs 3:5-6. Her later years were filled with purpose and joy as she served passionately at her beloved Convent Avenue Baptist Church. Gertrude was a dedicated Deacon, a supervisor of the Children’s Choir, and a volunteer in the CABC Food Pantry. Her love for service extended beyond the church walls – she gave her time to the Bronx Land Trust Board and proudly served as a block watcher for the 43rd Precinct Police Department.
On a peaceful day at home, Getrude passed away at the remarkable age of 99, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering faith. Though she will be deeply missed, her joyful spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew her. She is survived by her son Keith and granddaughter Lisandra. Gertrude now joins countless loved ones including her beloved husband, Charles; her precious daughters Sharon and Gail; her daughter-in-law Nicole; and her dear siblings Oliver, Katherine, Berdia, and Luther Jr.—reunited in eternal peace and joy
