Loretta was born on March 11, 1962, at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, New York, to the late Junior Thomas and Mary Thomas. She attended William H. Taft High School and spent many years working at the New Orleans Hotel. Loretta later devoted over a decade of her career to the Department of Education at Roosevelt High School. Her dedication, kindness, and the meaningful difference she made in the lives of those around her will always be remembered and cherished.
Loretta was deeply loved by her community. She watched generations of children grow up on the block, always offering a listening ear and a caring heart. Whether someone had a concern, a worry, or just needed to talk, Loretta was the one they could count on. She had a special way of making people feel safe, seen, and supported.
Loretta was a devoted mother to her four children, always by their side through life’s ups and downs. She shared a special bond with each of them. Her firstborn, Lakisha, mirrored her strength and resilience and was her biggest cheerleader. She admired Ervert for his heart of gold and purest intentions. William, her firecracker, kept her on her toes with his adventurous spirit. And then there was Shandanik, the youngest, her constant companion, her ride-or-die, and best friend. Loretta’s love for her children was deep and unconditional.
Loretta was affectionately known by many nicknames: “Lola,” “Low-Low,” and “Lolita.” She loved spending time with her family and those closest to her. Whether she was hosting a barbecue, playing cards with loved ones, or dancing at parties and gatherings, Loretta brought joy and energy wherever she went. And let’s not forget, some of her favorite pastimes were a good trip to the casino, where she truly came alive, and dining at her favorite restaurant, Dallas BBQ!
Loretta loved being outside near the house station, firing up her grill and turning on her speaker. It became a neighborhood tradition, when you saw Loretta’s grill and heard the music playing, you knew good times were coming. Her gatherings were filled with laughter, dancing, and joy. She celebrated everyone around her, no matter the occasion, creating memories that will live on in the hearts of many.
In September of 2020, Loretta suffered a stroke that left her partially paralyzed. Surrounded by the love and support of her family and friends, she faced the challenge with incredible strength and determination. It was the unwavering presence of her children, grandchildren, and loved ones that gave her the courage to keep going. Her deep love for life and for the people who meant the most to her was the driving force behind her resilience. Loretta continued to embrace life with grace and strength until June 14, 2025, when God called her home. She passed away peacefully in her sleep, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unforgettable memories.
Though our hearts are heavy with sadness, we choose to remember the joy, love, and light that Loretta brought into our lives. Her warmth, laughter, and strength will never be forgotten. We will continue to honor her, and her spirit and legacy will live on for generations to come.
