In Loving Memory of Marie Elizabeth Fields

With profound sadness, but even greater gratitude, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Marie, who was born in New York City to the late parents, Agnes James and Elias Conklin. She was a long-time resident of New York City, then in 2005 moved to New Jersey. Marie and her identical twin (Patricia) were the eldest of seventeen children. She was raised by her aunt, Mae Lightbourne, alongside her two cousins, Alma and Beverly Davis, who she considered to be her sisters.

Marie was the devoted wife of the late Nimrod Fields. Together they raised four children, Jefferey, Linda, Paul, and Diahann. As the eldest of her siblings, Marie naturally took on the role of caretaker, guide, and protector due to the early passing of her Mother. She helped raise her brothers and sisters; with the same warmth and patience she later showed her own children. Her nurturing spirit extended even further, earning her the deep admiration of her many nieces and nephews who knew her not just as “Aunt Marie”, but as a second mother, confidante, and role model.

Marie’s incredible work ethic was admired by all who knew her. A determined and capable leader, she rose to managerial positions in every workplace she joined. Beyond her family and work, Marie enjoyed reading, cooking, baking, metaphysical practices and listening to Motown sounds, but her favorite artist was R. Kelly.

Marie was the embodiment of love in action. She had the rare gift of making everyone feel seen, valued and loved. Her home was a place of comfort and belonging, a sanctuary where laughter echoed through the rooms, and no one ever left hungry – emotionally or physically. She was always quick to hold your hand or lovingly embrace you, offering both solace and joy with her gentle touch and reassuring presence. She was deeply committed to maintaining lifelong friendships, and her ability to stay connected with others – no matter the distance or time.

Marie is survived by her children and her sons-in-law Mark Bell Sr. and Walter. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Mark Jr., and his wife Johanna, Monique and her husband Shawn, and Kendra. She was a great-grandmother to Syan, Olivia and Hailey. She also leaves behind four brothers and five sisters, and a host of nieces and nephews.

Marie lived her life with purpose. Her legacy is not only in the family she nurtured, but in the countless lives she touched along the way. Though we mourn her physical absence, we celebrate the eternal impact she leaves behind.
